Slow DVD Backup

I am currently using DVD Shrink to backup some of my original DVDs with the following machine:

Processor AMD 2800 (2 Ghz)
Ram 512 Megs
Motherboard Nforce 2
DVD Writer: NEC 3520
Hard Drive: Samsung 7200rpm 40 Megs
OS: Win 2000

It takes me anywere between 40 mins to 1 hr to back up a DVD on to my Hard Drive with above machine. My friend tells me that it takes him about 20 min. His machine is a Pentium 4 2.5 Ghz running Win XP while the DVD is an older NEC (version unavailable). My NEC drive should be newer so why the difference ???

It also takes me 35 min to burn the DVD with Nero 6 while it takes him around 15 min. Is this possible. Am i doing something wrong ?

i have same cpu as you... most films take me 15/20mins to rip to hard disc (movie only), some discs do take longer if they're a little scratched. i do ALL burning at 4x which equates to 15mins burning. this would normally sound like a simple DMA issue, however i note you have an nforce motherboard. i think it'd be easier to have a look thru a Nero log. Pls post LAST section of your logfile which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log, but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar
