Hey all,
I've been living with this problem for quiet a while been trying all types of different things; thought i might get some advice from u guys. So here it goes:-
Ever since i got my DVD-RW this has been happening; i got a dvd-rom and a dvd-rw. Now this happens half of the time when i put in either a dvd or cd any type be it data or music or movie my pc freezes. Once i reset (cold-boot) and put in the same dvd or cd it either works the second time or freezes again. They way i've hooked up the dvd-rw and dvd-rom in the first place was make the dvd-rw as a secondary master and dvd-rom as a secondary slave. Now i kno what ur all thinking. I have 3 HDD one SATA the others IDE; now i did try combine the dvd-rom with my main OS IDE HDD making it a primary slave and the HDD primary master. And the dvd-rw as a secondary slave the 2nd HDD as the secondary master. This didn't work either. I've tried visa-versa and still no go. It still randomly freezes no matter what cd/dvd i put in; there are days where everything is fine and after the 6th cd/dvd i put in it freezes; its just random. Even if i take out the cd/dvd it still continues to hang. I can't move the mouse, can't ctrl+alt+del i have to use the reset button. I'm totally puzzled by this and thought i might get some advice; maybe someone has come across this problem b4.

My specs are:-
P4 3ghz
2x512gig ram (samsung)
Pioneer DVD-ROM 121
Poineer DVD-RW 109
Seagate 160gig SATA
Seagate 60gig (OS HDD) IDE
WD 80gig IDE
WINDOWS 2000 SP4

Any advice would be greatly appriciated.
Thx.

check to make certain you have the slave jumper in the middle 2 of the six pins. what ide cable are you using, the 40 wire 40 pin or 80 wire 40 pin?

hi ddp,
Yes the pin is on slave of the DVD-ROM; and DVD-RW is master pin. Not too sure but i'm guessing 80 wire 40 pin; pretty much wat eva came with the asus p4p800 deluxe mobo.

ddp my pc freezes because of the cd/dvd i put in either of the drives; if i were to unplug both the dvd-rom and DVD-RW it would be perfect but then it would totally defeat the purpose because i wouldn't be able to use cd's or dvd's.

Hi!

Based on my experience, your problem is not connecting your drives and dvd-roms, but power supply! Trust me, when you try to insert cd in slave device, both master & slave has to draw power from the power supply. Your HDD drives (three of them) are using it all the time. Most common display of this is that computer freezes or even resets itself when you stress your power supply too much. Ignore signs 400W and similar on its label, that is how much MAX output it can produce in IDEAL conditions.

Solution : Buy a second power supply, install it in your ATX case and power dvd's from it. HDD's and motherboard leave on the first one. Or what ever combination you like, just not everything on the same one!
