Question number 1:
How reliable are the Sony brand DVD-R's? They have made in Taiwan on the package.

Question 2:
I have some of the horrible Memorex and Maxell discs left over. I bought them before I read on here how bad they were, and also discovered for myself. But are they any good as just a data disc? I've got about 50 or so of them, and while I agree as movie discs they're worthless. I'm curious if they hold up under straight data storage?
Any help would be appreciated.

"Question number 1:

I bought a 20 pack of Tiawanese (Id'd as Sony) that worked fine for both data & DVD video. Data was burned at 8x & video was burned at 4x.

"Question 2:

If both brands ID as CMC then I'd throw them all away & get some better discs. I never used the Memorex but have used the 4x (made in Japan) MCC coded discs with exellent results. Before tossing the Maxell find out who made it first. They should be fine as data discs. Try one for DVD at a speed of 4x. Play it back & see if it skips or pauses. If it does then use the rest for data or toss them.

I've got some 8x Ritek GO5's (burned at 4x) that are showing freezing problems on some of the discs so I'm not using any of the rest for video. Instead I'll reburn those discs on some 8x Taiyo Yuden media that I got online awhile back though I'll be running out of them soon.

The 8x Ritek was bought at Meritline & seems to do fine for data. I'll get some more TY there or at Rima whichever is cheaper...

Q-#1: Sony 1x-8x are very good, but I try to get the Japanese ones. The taiwanese and Japanese dash 1x-8x will code as Sony08D1.Same MID code, 2 different countries!

Sony +1x-8x. Very good. Japanese are yuden000-T02 and taiwanese are SonyD11. Very good media from both MID code.

Sony -1x-4x and -4x. Austria and taiwan are among the different countries of this speed media, using the same exact Sony04D1 code. The dash 1x-8x is far superior, according to my benqs.

sony +1x-4x: Usually Ricohjpn-01, pretty good. Not as good as the 1x-8x speed media.

Q #2: Depending on what memorex you got, usually a lot of cmags on their media. Prodisc and Ricohs are also on a little bit of their media. Very hard to find the good ones. I have no trouble with them, but I burn them as slow as I can and don't put anything important on them. You can get better media for the same price and cheaper.

Maxell are usually very good. Usually firmware updates on certain burners takes care of majority of issues. Here's some of their MID codes:
-4x: Ty-g01/Mxl-Rg02/Ritek-g04/very few cmags in small 3 or 5 pack.
-8x: Mxl-rg03/Ritek-g05
+4x: Ricohjpn-01
+8x: Maxell-002-00,made by hitachi of japan/Ritek-r03-taiwan

Other than the taiwanese -4x in the small 5/3 jewel packs, all those manufactures are very good. Notice how you have 4 different MID codes on the maxell dash 4x. That's where different burners can have trouble with 1 certain MID code on them. I love maxells. My benqs don't complain about any of those MID codes.

The Sony media both Taiwan & Japan in +R and -R are very good! If it says "Accucore" on it, it's good stuff! I have tried both, I like the Made in Japans best, but both work flawlessly!

Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

No offense here... I didn't mean to pull anything and I really mean it. Maxell is "not" horrible, it is rank as #1 class media along with the famous Yuden and Verbatim. Take a look here http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm and you'll see what I mean.

On the other hand, I totally agree that Memosux aka Memorex is crap, horrible and inferior to today's media technology. So, it is not right to put "Maxell" in the same class as Memosux period. In contrast, Maxell is another genuine top notch media along side with Verbatim and Yuden. In addition, "not" a single Maxell media is made by that crap CMC MAG whatsoever. Just a note that's all.

@ alkohol hi :)
i notice you say Maxell DVD+R 8X (RITEKG05) should it not be +R 8X RITEKR03 where as RITEKG05 is -R 8X

@gurnard,

Yes... you are right. That was my fast response and perhaps, I could have mis-spelled it. It should be RITEKR03 instead of RITEKG05. Thanks for the clarification there buddy.

@gurnard - pressure is sometimes needed lol, but i see no regrets there so far. i've got thru about 30 of my 50 Riteks, with only a measly 800 Verbs in stock. i'm getting itchy fingers as payday is a mere fortnight away, Steve from svp was saying that he's getting some Fuji on soon, so may give a few of those a try, but just to say i've tried some more good media. me i love me Verbs, yum, especially the new Verb TY's
