I have the Epson R200 "direct to disc" printer but I find the printing software to be difficult to work with. As many of you that have this printer are aware, you have to import the image you want to print onto your blank dvd. You then have to stretch the image and it's difficult to not have any white around the hub when it prints. Is there a simple to use program that you don't have to mess with stretching the image? I've tried the Nero program that came with my Sony burner and it always prints the dvds incorrectly. Any one?

Try tweaking your Epson settings as they are more than likely the cause of the white rings. I find it extremely easy to use. I use: 119 mm outer, 22 mm inner, 25.4 height (top), 25.2 width (right) for Taiyo Yuden hub printables and 21 mm inner (with other 3 parameters the same) for Maxell hub printables. I like to use full images (no holes in the center)...

Hey thanks! I reset the perameters on it. I'll let you know if it works. By the way...have you ever used the Taiyo Yuden silver printables or the white printables. BBMayo and I talk alot and he raves about those Taiyos. I'm gonna order a spindle from SuperMediaStore as soon as I get some $$$. If you have used them, does the ink fully dry on the silver ones? Will they smear when you touch them? Have you used Pro-Disc? How are they at print qaulity?

I use the TY white printables almost exclusively. They are the best, hands down... My friend supplies the Maxells for his backups that I make for him... BTW, those TY printables are about $8 per 100 cheaper at Rima right now...

Hey,
I thought of some things I need to ask you. Ok...are you talking about importing a background image or a picture when preparing to print onto a dvd? I assume you meant a background image as you would have to hold down the control and shift keys and stretch an image right? I am currently using Maxells, although they don't have the print qaulity of the Memorex...but the Memorex suck as far as burning. Talk me thru it one more time. Have you ever used the Taiyo Yuden silver printables? Can you print in color with them or are they used for text primarily? How about the print qaulity of white printable Taiyos...better than others or grainy?
-Keith
I usually import as a picture since you can use the "handles" to stretch and you can click inside the image to drag the entire image around. I primarily use the TY white inkjet printables, but I do use the Maxells occasionally when doing back-ups for a friend of mine. You can print on the TY silver inkjet printables just as you do the white inkjet printables, but the silver has a "faux" holographic effect and the colors are not as "rich" in my opinion... Just be sure to get the silver inkjet printable and NOT the silver thermal printables (ink does not adhere well to the thermal discs)!!! You can address "graininess" by adjusting print quality, BUT I have found that the quality of the image affects graininess more than anything else!!! I leave my print quality on normal...

PS: I posted this as well as pm'ing you back because I am sure the same question(s) will arise again and the next person will have this info at their disposal. Hope you don't mind...

EDIT: Oh yeah, I DO think the TY's print better than the Maxells... Those are the only two brands that I have used. I am sure there is someone else who has tried a larger variety and can be more subjective... I coat my discs with Patricia Nomick's to waterproof them...

I do not.

Your post used the word "cover." Do you mean "cover" or are you discussing the actual DVD printing, as is being discussed above?

IF you truly meant the outer cover (for a DVD case used to store a DVD), then I do the following... MANY printers cannot pint all of the way to the outer edge of a sheet of paper. This is common. The size of a DVD cover happens to be right in this area, so many printers can have problems in this area. I print my covers using legal size paper. I tell the printer I am using legal size paper. This has always worked for me. Then, I size the image to match the covers I am using. These can vary from batch to batch, and from brand to brand. The ones I am using now are 7.22 inches X 10.80 inches. I re-size the graphic to this, and it fits perfectly. The last batch I bought, months ago, was 7.22 inches by 10.85 inches... they do vary.

IF I am wrong, and you are discussing printing on the actual DVD, the following should resolve your issues (and also some of the ones discussed in the posts above):

Note that you do need to set the Epson software so it matches your blank media exactly. The default settings of the program are (usually) NOT correct, and you will find that almost every brand of blank printable media differs slightly both on the inside setting, and also on the outside setting. Some discs are hub printable, some are not. Even then, the exact location where the "printable" area ends is quite different from brand to brand. The outer edge varies, too. One brand will place the "printable area" much closer to the outer edge than the next brand. You need to adjust the software to tell it where these "limits" are located, and if you change media, you need to change these settings.

There is a good chart over at Videohelp.com, with most of the more common ones listed, and the corresponding settings for the Epson software. There are also links to templates, for most of them, but I do not use those. However, it is very important that you set the inside and outside dimensions correctly in the Epson software.

Here is a link to the chart:

http://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=253367

For example, I use the white Taiyo Yuden hub printable blank discs. If you look at the chart, this means that I had to re-set the Epson software as follows:

119mm x 23mm

To set this in the Epson software, look down the left-hand side, for the yellow DVD toward the bottom -- the one that says "Set Inner / Outer Diameter" if you put your mouse over it. Click on it. Choose custom, and type in the desired parameters.

The other key issue -- if your DVD is hub-printable (which I prefer), remember that not all commercial DVDs have any image at all in that inner area. Some store-bought DVDs just stop well before that inner hub. Others will carry an image almost all of the way to the inner hole. In those cases where the image stops short of your blank media, you may have to get creative, and find a way to "fill" that area prior to importing the graphic into the Epson software. If you do not, you can expect to see an annoying white "band" close to the center hole, or an annoying silver "band" close to the center hole. You can fill this area in almost any graphics program (even Microsoft Paint which came with Windows). I sometimes copy and paste, or use the paintbucket tool, or various blends and fills using the color scheme of the rest of the DVD. Anything that can look deliberate. I use Photoshop. I often fill the entire center area, if it is necessary, and then let the Epson software correctly stop printing precisely at the edge of the printable area, using the chart above. This way, all of my prints look professional.

I don't know what programs other members in here use to make their dvd labels and or print on their backup dvds, but below is what I use and loving it. Actually, I don't mind the stretching/fixing on the Epson's Print CD/DVD software at all. You'll just need to work around a bit and eventually you'll get it right on the spot.

01) Adobe PhotoShop 8 - to do all my text/name editing, cloning, touching/fixing up colors of the picture/image that I like (want on my dvd).

02) NEATO's FullFace CD/DVD software - to import my picture on Neato's while Adobe PhotoShop 8 is opening. Now I resize it and make it perfectly fit onto Neato's FullFace CD/DVD software. Once I put my name on, edited out any unwanted parts, fix and touch up the image, then I saved it under "My Pictures" folder.

03) open up Epson Print CD/DVD - now I imported my nicely done image that I created earlier with Adobe PhotoShop and Neato. Again, now I stretch my image so it can be perfectly fit on the Print CD's label, once I'm done with that, I'll set set the "inner" and "outer" diameter so it'll be nicely print onto my printable Taiyo Yuden backup disc. Finally, I'll just hit print and presto... I'm done.

Im having the same probs with the epson software, most cd/dvd labels are fine, but a couple when i drag n drop on to the template im maybe 2mm out for some reason. And i cant seem to stretch and fit as there doesnt appear to be an option to do so. Tried ctrl shift etc, nothing works, any help would be most appreciated.

In the Epson Print CD/DVD software, once you have imported any graphic image, you should see 8 tiny black "boxes" located at various outer edge points around the image. (NOTE -- If you do not see these, try placing your mouse pointer anywhere over the image, and simply click to select the image.)

When the tiny black boxes are visible, take your mouse pointer and place it over one of the boxes. The arrow will change to a cross. Click the left mouse button, and simply drag. With practice, you can get very precise... if you need to, you can re-size the "view" so you can magnify it until it is HUGE. (The "plus" icon at the top can do this). Then, you can be remarkably accurate where you place each and every edge point. Repeat for any points, until it is perfect.

I think they're talking about using the pic as the background. I've never found a fix for this either. I click on the add pic box, and then scan the original disc, to get the adjustable label. It's not hard. You just have to take your time, if you want it perfect. I like this Epson software! My Epson prints the whole cover. My HP doesn't...............
Good luck!

I guess I am still confused. I just deliberately tried to replicate this, and chose to "IMPORT" a graphic, and tried to use the "SELECT BACKGROUND" option. I even chose an image which was too small, on purpose. I am still given the option to re-size the image, using the tiny black boxes, using the mouse. I was able to "fix" the image quickly, so it fit.

Are some of us working with a different version of the software, perhaps? Or, am I missing something else here?

I have the Epson R300 printer and use it regularly to print on Ty full hup printables. In the software for the Epson the 2nd. button down on the left lets you import a picture with grab handles to resize the image and move it totaly. The 3rd. button down will only import a fixed image and no movement or resizing is possible. Choose which one suits your needs best.

I scan discs at 600dpi, then open with MSPaint & crop/edit/touch-up. (Yeah, I know it's low-budget, but it'll do some editing that's hard to find in other programs.) It's important to crop it RIGHT to the edge of the real image - not necessarly the overprinted ink that's off the background. Then I open PrintCD, adjust the printable area, click the rectangular image button, & drop it in. Zoom in 3x & stretch the image exactly to the printable area, save, & print. No problems.
