That will only work if the folder is less than 4.38 gb or you are burning to DL media. Rip with dvdd in file mode then open the file useing dvd shrink to compress to folder to fit on a dvd5. Guides are in my sig.

You can reauthor and do movie only or edit out the extras. Also remove unneeded audio tracks and subtitles/subpictures if not required.

another question, if i have it on 55-70 percent will i be able to tell that much of a difference from the REAl thing...would it be worth getting dual layer dvds or would you rather just burn it at 55-70 percent? and do dual layer dvds play on regular dvd players?

Follow the guides for DVD Shrink on how to reauthor. Compressing over 30% (70 on slider) will be noticeable and I would definately use advanced analysis and extra smooth in quality settings. Just so you know this will also increase the time required to encode quite a bit.

The software I use for high compression applications is dvd-rb/cce. Dvd-rb is free but CCE costs $58. Dvd-rb installer comes bundled with a couple free encoders. I would use hc encoder and it is still better video quality wise than DVD Shrink. You can always install CCE later but many are very happy with hc encoder. Here is a guide with links to required software. Make sure you get the dvd-rb installer if you choose to try these. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/226877

Anytime you have to compress you will loose some quality although I edit my folders and remove some garbage with dvdremake and I don't notice any quality loss on my 52" HDTV. You can make a 1:1 copy on DL media but I recommend booktyping DVD+R media to dvd-rom if your dvdrw is capable of bitsetting to improve compatability. Some have compatability problems with dvd DL media if it is not booktyped dvd-rom. Again not all dvdrw's are capable of bitsetting/booktyping and you can only booktype dvd+r/rw media to dvd-rom, not dvd-r/rw media.

I doubt I will ever use DL media because dvd-rb/cce does such a good job of compressing.

it changes the format of the dvd to a format more players are familiar/compatable w/ and know how to read some of the older players will not have the cpability to read some of the newer format's so some of your burners will allow the change of the format so older players will play nice w/ your new media!

deesel,

I don't really know what else you want to know. The best quality will be DL media but it also costs a lot more and is really not necessary if you want movie only in most situations. I've not had a need for DL media as of yet due to the quality of rb/cce. The best encoder/compression software for video quality is dvd-rb/cce or hc but DVD Shrink has more editing features. Do you want only the main movie or the entire disc backed up. Do you prefer speed or quality (you can't have both). Tell me what you want to do and we'll go from there.

The menu will still look the same but the extras will not be on the backup and will not play. In other words if you click on extras with your remote or mouse nothing will happen.

Why don't you start and become familiar with DVD Shrink 1st. It is free and more user friendly. There are guides in my sig.

When the compression tab in DVD Shrink shows me anything below 70%, I use the slow adaptive error compensation of max smoothness in the backup options. This helps quality considerably on those highly compressed entire dvd backups.I don't know if you use that enhancement, but well worth trying before spending any cash on something else.

It takes a while longer, depending on your pc specs, but worth it.

Congrats mort on the addict status!!!! I've got less than 150 to go.

Any thoughts on how to use DVD Decrypter or any other utility to do 1:1 disk copies with DL media? I have tried using the DVD Decrypter method (ISO read, ISO write) and I got an incompatible format error message. I have had success doing single layer DVDs with Decrpyter and DVD Shrink so I am frustrated that I am suddenly stumped. Can someone please help?
