Actualy shrinking(compressing) a DVD is called Transcoding. It is when you take a DVD that is bigger then a DVD5 disc and shrinking it to fit onto the DVD5 disc.

Some DVD you buy are on DVD5 (single layer) or DVD 9 (double layer}

If you have single layer blank DVD media the DVD9 disc will have to be Transcoded (COMPRESSED) to fit on a DVD5 disc.

You can burn a DVD9 disc without transcoding if you have a Blank DVD9 Disc{double layer].

The diffrence between them are a:

DVD5 disc only has 1 layer burnt on the 1 side.

DVD9 Has 2 layers burnt on 1 side.

Also price comes in as well, which means single layer blank media is cheaper then double layer media. SO most op for the single layer and transcoding to it if the DVD is bigger then thier single layer DVD.

Programs you can use.

DVD Decryptor (which is free but isnt updated anymore) to rip the files off onto your hard drive and take out the copyprotection for you to bebale to burn them. You can also burn with DVD Decryptor.

"AnyDVD" program (rips copy protection off)which is free for a time periode after words you need to pay $40 but is updated frenquility and can do every DVD outthere. The downside to this program is it dosent rip the files to your hard drive it just runs in the background while your transcoding the DVD off your DVD drive.

DVD Shrink is a program to Transcode

Nero Recode 2 is a program to Transcode

there are other 1 click prograsms you can use like FabDVD, DVDXcopy, a little easier to use but not as much edditing options. You can also buy a package with the AnyDVD program which includes CloneDVD to transcode the movie, but of course the package is more money.

of course you need burrning software.

Yes DVD Shrink ,DVD Decrypter or CloneDVD 2 (with anydvd)WILL tranfer the movie to your harddrive and shrink the file also. theses programs also remove the copy protection. then you can copy to dvd.

you can download CloneDVD 2 with AnyDVD as a free trial heres that link.this is what i use and is VERY easy and a great program .and if you decide to buy type in "afterdawn" and get 10 bucks off on the combo making it 49 dollars total ,thats a great deal you wont be sorry

just dive in and try some of them ,its the best way to learn ,heres a guide to get you started

and also remember to use GOOD blank media as in Taiyo Yudens or Verbatims and burn at 4X max.
