I purchased a computer in early August that has a Dual DVD writer. I've tried numerous times to burn/copy DVD movies using DVD Shrink 3.2 and now DVDXCopy but to no avail.

Just last night it finally 'burned' one (at least I thought) because it stated burning successful. I've tried that DVD on 3 different players and it didn't work. Does my PC only burn to dual DVDs? Or can it be to any type of DVDs?

The reason I purchased this computer was so that I could have the option of burning movies but that hasn't worked out.

I've tried using DVDXCopy 5 times and four of the five times, I've gotten this message: Error Writing DVD Please check the log file for more information

Any ideas?

more information would be helpful

Prograsm you are using to transcode and burn

What program came with your computer to burn and what program do you use to burn?

What type and brand of media are you using? Exam "brand name of DVD" are they "DVD-R or DVD+R"?

Model number of your burnner?

Steps you use to backup your DVD?

Answer them question to let us help you better.

I am using DVDXCopy to copy/burn the movies. (I know about Sony movies) I was using Memorex DVD+R but went to get some DVD-R to see if that would make a difference.

I have this PC: http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Compaq-Presario-Desktop-PC-SR1550N...

Id sugest downloading DVD Decryptor and ripping the movie to your hard drive then open it up in DVD shrink and compress it have the output size of the DVD in Shrink as costum set to 4300 and then have DVD Shrink make an iso for the output file then you can use DVD Decryptor to burn the ISO to DVD media.

Below is a link to download the programs stated above off this site.

@zstomp, Friend many will warn you to avoid Memorex media. It might burn successfully but after a few months you cannot use it or make a copy from it. I would suggest using Taiyo Yuden, Verbatims, Maxells, Sonys (made in Japan), FuJis (Made also in Japan). Avoid the media from CMC...crap media. I also suggest burning at 4x or slower on the burn speed when using any program. Standalones are picky, but they will play the good media perfectly.

p.s. Many use +R and then Booktype them to -R or Dvd Rom...That way the media will be able to be used on a wider variety of players. In Nero, Shrink, Decrypter there are areas where you can select that the media be booktyped (if your burner is able to do that!) What brand of burner? Type of media? Burn Speed? This information can help us help you. Thanks my friend!

@zstomp, Have you checked out the guide at AD...converting a Dvd to DVDR using Shrink? It's a good guide. After you decide whether or not to do full backup or movie, hit backup then the screen will give you options on Burn settings and the critical parts of deep analysis and the encoding (Usually set to Sharp). If using compression select these two options, they do a great job. Then select if Shrink will burn the movie automatically (Using decrypter or Nero burning rom...they must be installed!). Here is where you can select burn speed. Remember burn at 4x or slower. IMPORTANT: When using x copy make sure there are no other progs. (Virus scans, HD backup software) running they cause problems for x copy. AD has a great x copy site a nd a list of known problems from other programs. I use to use it, but strictly use Rebuilder Pro/CCE Basic, Intercopy 3 from INtervideo, CloneDVD 2 from Slysoft and now even Recode 2 from Nero (the same guy who developed Shrink). I have x copy but do not use it. These other programs can be downloaded for trial for 21 days. After you get the hang of Shrink, you might want to try these...they are free for 21 days...

www.slysoft.com for CloneDVD 2 (I have AnyDVD in the background...comes fromt he same company...AWESOME!)
Intervideo comes from www.intervideo.com (Version 4 is out...new though!)

Ask anything and I'll try to help.

@ZStomp

If your burning with DVD X Copy your probably burrning at the fastest speed cause I dont think DVD XCopy will let you change the speed. This is a problem because you shouldnt be burrning any faster then 4x.

Download the programs above I told you to get at the link then you can find guides how to use them if you need help. Here are some good guides made by a long time member at this forum named SCuba Pete.

http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/tutorial007.html

Go to the website and read the guides he has so Generously made for us. The only way you will bebale to help us help you, is to help yourself and read up on diffrent programs and try following the guides that are givin. All of us has been in your shoes I know i have and the only reason i know what i know now is from guides and threads that i have serched for and read up on in this forum and others.

@zstomp, friend, sorry your still having problems. The only thing I would suggest is going to the afterdawn thread that deals with Dvd X Copy. I found that I had an item that caused the same error. It was a program that came with my Seagate External HD. The program would automatically come on and basically run and back up the system. This caused the error message from Dvd X Copy quite freguently and a lot of grief. I turned off the program and no more problems, but I never use it any longer as the issue with burn speed is big, unless you use 4x or slower media...same thing goes for Intervideo copy 3 or 4, but really this can be remedied if you safe the files to HD and burn with Nero, Copy to Dvd.
Again, many at AD, includign myself use better, and more consistant programs...such as Rebuilder/HC by Hanks (Both free, unless you move to Pro and use the commercial encoder by Cinema Craft $60.00), CloneDVD 2, Recode 2 or Shrink and I use Intervideo Copy 3 as well.
Many can be downloaded for trial so that an individual can see if the program is what they need.
Hope this helps.

My PC has the feature LightScribe (Direct Disc Labeling)- does this mean it only uses these type of DVDs?

Thanks.
