I hope I'm in the right place. I have a Dell Dimension 3000 w/1 gig ram and a 80 gig HD and I just added a 200 gig HD. After loading the new HD I have lost all the speed on DVD decryptr. It used to run real fast, now it decodes at about 1500 kb/s. What can I do. I also noticed that DVD shrink is also runnig slow. Thanks for the help.

Welcome to aD!
Make sure you are in DMA mode and not PIO (sloooow) mode. Here's a guide for help:

as binkie so nicely pointed out, this is definitely a DMA issue~ :)
your slow rips are due to your system reverting back to PIO mode after the new HD install~ :)

GO BINKIE~!! whoo hoo~

I'm sooooo pissed! You guy'/lady's are sooo right on the money! I tried what you said and (bummer) it didn't work, so this mornig in Lebanon, Maine, USA I couldn't get hold of any of the forum members for help and got desperate because I have a bunch of rented flicks to burn. And can't take 3 hours for each one. So I ripped out the cables to the new harddrive and just like you said it's a harddrive issue. I booted back up and decrypter is running like a race horse. At least I'll get my movies ripped until you fine people can perhaps help me out. Thanks so much for all your help, you've been great!

Not a prob- that's what aD is all about!
What problems are you still having? If it's the one still in PIO - uninstall the ide channel thru device manager and reboot. This should force windows in reinstall the drivers and use dma mode.

Edit to add: Hey Kivory - tks :)

It works until I reboot then it goes back to PIO. I spent 4 hours on the phone with Dell support and they can't figure it out. I'm mystified. Thanks in advance for any help. The drive is a maxtor now a 120 GB it's first off the mother board and the boot drive 2nd, all on the same cable. The master is set to master and the 120gb is set to slave. Am I crazy or should this work. It's not the first drive I've installed, however it's the fI've installed in a Dell. Thanks Mitch

I finally figuered it out after all day on the chat and phone with Dell support and they could not get it out of PIO moe. I took a break, had dinner, and relaxed a little bit. I came back and decided to look in my Bios, guess what, although the drive showed in "my computer" theBios never recognized it. After I fixed the bios and booted everything went to ultra DMA 5. It never fails to amaze me, it's always the simplist most stupid thing one overlooks when working on these quirky machines. To all of you thanks for letting me into the forum and thanks for helping me work through this problem.. If I can ever do the same please let me know. Please have a great day! Mitch

good to see you got it resolved mitch, despite being on the phone ALL day w/ Dell support ( i REALLY hope you didn't get put on the phone with one of the guys in india with a VERY heavy accent~LOL, that happened to me last time so i just gave up~ couldn't take it anymore)

the thing with computers is that what people OFTEN overlook is the most simple answer to the problem, i build my own computers as a hobby and in the beginning, ran into all sorts of problems installing drives, vidcards, etc.etc.., when the solution was the BIOS was WAYYYYY out of date~ once i flashed the BIOS, everything worked like a charm...

good to see you are up and running again, have a good one and welcome to AD once again~ :)
