I think WINavi can do this, but it isn't freeware

Also not sure on the sort of quality you would get

Some freeware here, searched and I located this, I have no experience of it but it has been downloaded a fair few times.

Don't really use it anymore though i bought it so I could turn .avis into .vobs but then bought VSO DivXtoDVD as it gave much better results. unfortunately DivXtoDVD can't turn WMV's into AVI's so this could be the program your looking for

Xilisoft video converter can do this job well, easy and fast. It can be free download to have a try, but have to pay for a little to get the full versio. In my personal, I think it worth to have a try.

hi J-Kwon, I've used winavi for a long time. And also did some wmv conversions. I'm very pleased with the results. Maybe you missed some codec with the conversion.
