I was having trouble with pixelation when using DVD-X-Copy. I took the plung and bought a dual layer burner. I used DVD-FAB and Nero and still had the problem. I tried DVD Decryptor and ICopy DVDs2, but had the same problem. I am trying to make copies of my episodic DVDs. I am using Memorex DVD+R DL disks.
Can anyone help? I'm out of options and patience!

Probably the memorex!!! It can't be said enough, it's crap media. Check out the DVD-R media section here at AD. Try some better quality media and burn at 4X. See if this helps! Good luck!

Memorex aren't highly recommended on single layer media. From what I have been seeing in the forums,their dual layer + media is made by ritek.

Nero 6 has problems with the layer break on dual layer media.Nero 7 is suppose to take care of that when it is released next month.
Dvd decrypter is a fine dual layer backup program.

Let us know if it is the stand alone player that gives this pixellation. Also play that backup on your pc using the DVD-RW drive that burned it.Look at the general area where the pixellation takes place on that stand alone,if that is where it occurs.You can also try that backup on other stand alones to see how they play them.

I agree with david and Saugmon try a better brand of disk and burn at a lower rate, some of those programs you mentioned will default to the max speed in burning. On those dual layer Decrtyper should be able to handle those with no problem, just make sure you use the 2.4x burn speed.

I used DVD Ident and Memorex are made by Ritek. Also, I did burn at 2.4

Try a verbatum DVD+R DL and booktype it dvd-rom if your dvdrw drive is capable.

Do regular movies come out pixelated too?
Have you watched the original episodic DVD that you're having pixels on the backup with?
I ask because most episodic DVDs aren't encoded with as high a bitrate as movies in the first place. So you have a lower quality source that you're working with and you will notice flaws in the backup more.

Mort81: I'm not familiar with the term "booktype". What is it? How do I see if my drive can do it? (I'm guessing it can since it's a new Sony drive.) I've been using 1ClickDVDCopy. Is "booktype" software driven?
Squizzle: Yes, even regular movies comes out with pixellation. But it's almost never at the film's beginning. It usually starts in the middle and eventually the movie becomes unwatchable.

Here is a good read about booktyping/bitsetting. http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/150 What model sony do you have? Most sony's are rebadged lite-on's and are capable of bitsetting. I also suggest useing DVD Decrypter to make your DVD9 backups. Guides are in my sig.

Mort: My burner is Sony DRU-800A. I'll reading the article.
Will decryptor let me remove trailers, warnings, etc.?
If I use Decryptor, is Nero ok to burn it with?

You're drive is a rebadged litey SOHW-1693S. You should be able to use the lite-on booktype utility. Here's a link. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=83441 There is also a usage guide on the page.
Dvd decrypter wil not allow you to do any advanced editing or reauthoring. I use dvdremake for that. Note: if you remove the garbage such as previews, trailers, and warning screens you're trimmed and polished folder in most cases will be small enough to use a dvd5 with a good transcoder/encoder such as dvd-rb/cce.
I've yet to require the need for DL media because I remove trailers, previews, warning screens, and the extras I don't want with dvdremake and then encode with dvd-rb/cce and burn with nero. No noticeable video quality loss on my 52" hdtv. I might use some DL media on LOTR extended vs.

I looked into the programs you mentioned. DVD-rb/cce, etc. And they seem a bit complicated. I was able able to copy a DVD with AnyDVD and 1ClickdvdCopy. However, the quality wasn't very good. Do your think Booktyping it to DVD-ROM would help the quality on my stand-alone player? The quality is better on the computer screen than the player.
P.S.: I really appreciate all your help. It must get tiring answering questions that are probably so basic for you.

Booktyping shouldn't affect the quality of playback.The booktyping helps on those stand alones that give you a No disc inserted/illegal disc type of errors.This means they will not even try to play those backups.
Your pc plays it fine.Issues on a stand alone player: This will point to your stand alone having a problem about your backups.Usually media quality/burning software/multi-tasking/paper stick on labels/too fast of burn/too much compression,or even that stand alone could stand to have a thorough laser lens cleaning- on those freezing/pixellating issues.

I don't think booktyping to dvd-rom will improve the quality. It is basically used to improve compatability. I don't know why the quality would be better on your pc than your stand alone. I would look into booktyping your DVD+R media to dvd-rom anyway since your burner is capable and it for sure won't hurt. If you get some time play around with dvd-rb and hc encoder which comes bundled in with the dvd-rb installer. I'm assuming since you posted this in the DVD Shrink forum that you've tried shrink? I use shrink all the time and for me, the episodic discs almost always have at least some pixelization. Unless the disc just has a few episodes and little or no extras on it. Then there is very little compression needed and therefore no pixelization. Also, like squizzle said, alot of episodic discs just don't have the best picture to begin with. The first couple of seasons of Married w/ Children are a good example of that. If you use DVD Shrink, click "Edit" then "Preferences" and set the target DVD size to "custom" and change it to anywhere from about 4300 to 4400. And don't forget the re-author option in shrink also. But if you use full disc option you can change the extras to still images if you don't want them and remove any audio you might not want such as director/actor commentary.
