Hey, I just tried backing up Spiderman 2. I replaced the dummy.bin file, because I heard that it needs to be replaced or else the game will run slowly. I just create a dummy file and overwrite the original dummy file with MagicISO. This is much faster. I suggest using MagicISO for this purpose. You don't need to extract anything. Just overwrite the file and save the iso. This is the only thing that got Metal Gear Solid 3 working for me.
I think that game's TOC was too high without replacing the dummy. Well, I put the Spiderman 2 backup in and it took forever to load, and it plays very, very slowly. I'm using Maxell Dvd+R's. That was the first disc out of the batch, so I was thinking maybe my ps2 doesn't like them, so I burned Rainbow 6: Lockdown with one and it plays just fine.
Also, I remembered that I burned Killer 7 without ever replacing its dummy file, because I forgot to check for one, and it plays perfectly. So, I'm thinking that as long as you use good media, then Spiderman 2 and a few other games probably need their dummy files to space out the data. I was told replacing the dummy file will always make the games run smoother, but I don't think this is right. I'm about to sign off and burn another copy, this time without replacing anything. If it works, then from now on I'm not going to mess with dummy files anymore unless the TOC is too high for my swap magic to boot the game.
So it seems to me that some games need those dummy files and developers put them on the disc to space out the data, and that only sometimes it is a form of copy protection. What's your opinion?
K, off to go try to get this game working.

For games that I've burned that had long loading times, such as Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, Batman Begins, Terminator 3, Metal Gear Solid 3, and others, I rebuild the games. I've never dealt with dummy file manipulation, and all of my games play smoothly.
I think it all boils down to the technique used by the person at hand when it comes to backing up games. For me, I just don't see the need to mess with dummy files. I've played games from start to finish that have internet postings of needing to deal with dummy files, but, my technique doesn't require them.
If you check the postings, I just submitted the "Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory Archiving Method." If you read that routine of mine, you will be me for the moment, and will see what I do. You may already be familar with those steps, but maybe it will shed some new light for you.

some games do have dummy files
and if you do not replace them then the game
will not work
like Bloodrayne 2 for an example.
Best way to avoid this is to search for the game title
here in the forums before you burn it and see what everyone
else said about it.
If you have a mod chip there is no need to ever replace them.
there are a few out there, but no more than 4-5% of the games
i have ever done had one's that needed to be replaced.
But trust me there are some.

FACT:
dummy files are not there to stop people using swapmagic disk's
there are there to make the game run smoother
the only thing is is that when the TOC exceeds the capacity of the swapmagic disks they become an ANNOYANCE to users of swapmagic, and must be removed
so i agree with your point :)

Steimy, I already know that. I already said that was the only way I could get MGS3 working. Yeah, that's what I thought hursty :) By the way, the new copy of spiderman 2 I burned without replacing the dummy file runs MUCH smoother. But anyways, for people just getting into backing up games... don't listen to what some people say. Only when the game is around 4.7gb or higher should you bother removing dummy files. Replacing dummy files can cause games to skip and stutter badly and should be avoided if possible.

I have modchip in my PS2 but it starts to choke with almost every game that has dummies, rebuilded copies with dummy files removed works perfectly. Most of the people say that dummies make games run smoother (because PS2 isn't good at reading discs which too small amount of data) but my personal results have told absolutely opposite, I don't know reason for this but it might have something to do with Sanyo's laser - regarding to many writers at different forums they are much worser than Sony's ones.
