Hi!

First post to AD. I searched the guides and forums but can't seem to find a thread that addresses my question. Apologies in advance if this is ground that's been covered in the past.

I have discovered (via this forum) that I've been using fake Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's for the last couple months. (fwiw, they came from cdrdvdrmedia.com) When I burn (with DVD Decrypter or Nero) I always have the software verify the data and after over 200 burns, I've had fewer than a dozen coasters. The overwhelming majority burn and verify with no problems. All my burns were also checked/played in my set-top player, a Philips DVP642, and have performed as expected. They include not only backups of purchased DVDs, but also compilations of XviD and DivX files as well.

But now that I've discovered the TY's I'm using are fakes, I'd like to be able to analyze a previously burned DVD. Not to re-verify the data, but to determine if the media is starting to degrade. I'm burning for archival purposes, not to watch-and-discard.

What kind of software am I looking for? Are there different programs that do this type of analysis and what are the pros/cons of each?

Thanks!

Hello and welcome to AD!!! I've not heard of such an app but I'll interested to see anyone post info on such an app. The one's I've heard of only verify data from the disc manufacturer not whether the disc is degrading or not. However, there is a software called cd/dvd inspector. It will tell you if there's bad sectors on the disc and will retrieve the info from the disc and allow you to save it so you're able to make another copy. There's no downside with this app. I obtained mine through a friend so I don't know how much it cost but you could probably google and find out. Good luck!

I too would love a program that would tell me that my DVD is degrading and you should backup while you can before it's too far gone!!!!! I don't think there's one out there that will do that! but with your problem of FAKE Taiyo Yuden disks.....the only thing a program can do is to tell you if your disks have errors in it's files written! That should be a good indication of disk degrading enough to be rendered useless, depending on the errors writen! If you find a program out there that will analyze ALL the DVD/CD disks out there and can determine if the disk is DEGRADING let me know! That sounds like a great program to me!

I'm experimenting with CDCheck to see if it's the solution I'm looking for.
