If you buy a movie on DVD, are the DVDs that they use good DVDs or do they suck, are they as good as Verbatim or TY?

I would imagine they use pretty high quality media. They're not going to sell crap media to consumers. At least, I would hope not.

Commerical DVDs are not burned, they are stamped. This means there is a big machine "pressing" the DVD data onto discs. Because of this, the quality of the finished product is usually very high.

indeed they are 'pressed'. Thank God they are not 'burnt' because we'd get more trouble with bad media. Otherwise the big movie companies would use bad media as a form of copy protection..

So is there any point of making a back up of the DVD or no?

@Fusionice - I don't follow your last reply. What I would say is that the whole point of backing up original dvd's is that they cost too much and are damaged too easily

Specially when you have younguns and friends who like to borrow your movies. Keep those originals out of harms way. Most people don't know how to handle and take care of a dvd.

Imagine if sony or columbia pictures used dvd + or dash format,AD would run amok and probably grow 1000 times with playback and no disc inserted issue threads.Absolute chaos.

Time would also be an issue. About a second or so to stamp out a dvd vs 5 mins + at a 16x burn speed?

saugmon- Right and just think of all those Dvd burners that they'd have to use ! And that would wear out from commercial use ! the Burner manufacturer's would have to stay in bussiness almost soley to keep the DVD duplicating plants supplied ! with little or no drives left for good folks like us! That's like waking up tommorow and finding out that there's no eggs ! in the world anywhere ! It's a hard or Dare I say a Hard Boiled concept to ponder ! But The original thread was a good question ! Anyhow old friend keep telling yourself ! it's only a dream ! it's only a dream ! Peace & happy Burning!
