Was looking at www.supermediastore.com at the Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD-R Media 's .

I was planning on buying about 400 of these dvd's, and don't want to waste money obviously..

First, would it be dumb to buy 400 at one time? I have about 300 dvd's burned now, and I need to copy them over to the TY ....but the hardest question is, which are better, the ones with the Silver Thermal Lacquer, or shiny surface. I really just plan to write in permanent marker no the dvd (unless this is a bad idea) so I'm not printing on these at all..labeling them at all.

Comments / Suggestions?

I am posting this reply here cause I do not want to hijack the other thread I was using =)

So would it be better to booktype DVD+r's, than use my DVD-r's which play in most dvd players?

Which way works in the most dvd players?

Last question, I promise -- After you booktype a dvd (if i choose to), when you copy it with a duplicator, it would be booktyped there too, correct?

im really not sure which is the best. the only tys i use are sony +r dvds ( no coasters yet ). i dont like buying over the internet. i have read that u need to use a dvd friendly dvd marker like sharpie. maybe kivory will swing by.

Buying 400 of those ty's could be risky. You need to know if your burner and stand alones are capable of using them. There's a slight chance they may not.

I've used the shiny thermal jet printable with the Ty-g01 code and they were ok. A couple bum discs on a couple, but the PIE and PIF scans looked great. Now I don't bother with the dash format. My benq booktyped dvd-rom backups play just about anywhere. Far more success than my dash backups.

If your burner is capable of booktyping to dvd-rom and your stand alones have no trouble with them, definitely booktype them with the plus format ty's.

You just want to make sure your pc drive/s and stand alones can handle those MID codes before purchasing 400 at a time. Just my 2 cents worth!

Sharpies are the safest form of labeling, other than leaving them blank.

Those 300 backups you have and plan to re-rip: What brand names/format of media are they burned on?

Well they are burned on all different kinds of media....some are memorex, unfortunently...

I understand buying only 100 to begin with, but now I think i've changed my mind a little.

I won't planning on reripping, but just copying the disc via the computer. I do not have a disc duplicator yet, actually just trying to talk myself into buying one, so i actually can't try it yet. My plan has changed a bit. I have done a little research on booktyping and bitsetting and such, and figured out I can't do it with my Sony Drive (or atleast I cant' find out how). Now I'm in the middle of researching a good drive to buy to get it going. I want to make sure this is the last time I would have to copy this many movies at one time, would rather go ahead and fix the booksetting stuff now, so it will play in more players. The movies are all burned on DVD-R (not sure if i can copy directly) on various brands (as i said). Memorex, Verbatim, a few sony. When everyone says "PIE and PIF scans looked great" what exactly are they doing to scan ?

Thanks for your help!

:)

knew i heard my name somewhere in here...hehe

well, i will have to agree with what saugmon stated, MAKE SURE 100% that your burner and standalone likes them and are compatible before you drop down big $$ for 400 of them~ :)

in terms of quality, i find NO difference between the shiny silver and the silver thermal lacquer ones~ :) most of the ones i buy in bulk (i actually buy about 600 at a time, from supermediastore, 600 at a time comes in an actual Taiyo Yuden box (says MADE IN JAPAN- right one the outside of the large box) with 6 packs of 100 each tightly wrapped in this sturdy, thick cardboard box, VERY secure during shipping/transit~)

naturally, i have tried and USED many Taiyo Yudens in the past, so i KNOW for sure that my burners/standalones really like them. few months ago i ordered about 1,800 from supermediastore, it came in 3 LARGE boxes approx 20lbs EACH and they were ALL safely packaged and secure. these were the 4x DVD-R TYG01s, which i have the MOST of, i have not run into a "bad spindle/batch" YET *knocks on wood*

i also have gone from using the TY 4x/8x DVD-R to the 8x DVD+R format, all my drives are able to booktype them and i have not had a single issue with the dvd-rom (booktyped dvd+R) playing in ANY of my set top players i own~ :)

so, my suggestion to you would be just to test out the compatibility first before you buy 400 of them...that would be the intelligent thing to do, you don't want to be stuck with 399 dvds that your system/setup cannot use do you? (after testing 1 out of course) return shipping will be expensive too if you cannot get supermediastore to pay for return shipping (sometimes they do, sometimes they don't, depending on if THEY feel like it based on circumstances)

do a little testing and that will make your buying decision a whole lot easier based on your testing results~ :) take it from there...

Yeah, I am sure this is waht I am going to do..

Whats a great drive thats easy to booktype ? I don't mind the money in a dvd burner, but I am looking for one that would rip faster tha most as well.

I had an older sony drive and replaced with a new sony drive, my rip times went from 20 mins a dvd to like 30. So i'm already looking to buy a new drive anyway if this can be dropped down a bit.

Ok i know this sounds stupid but is it possible to know if you are getting TYG01's before you actually can open / burn on the disc?

Benq 1620/1640 booktype well.My I haven't encountered any plus media that those babies don't like, even cmags.Re-rip backups on the fly: No problem. I've even been farting around with original dvd-5 movies ripping on the fly using anydvd and nero copy disc feature.Absolutely extraordinary burners. Those backups play just about anywhere!

The newer sony drives are rebadged lite-ons,also great burners with it's own booktyping utility.Your sony may be one of them.

Plextor has the booktyping feature, more money. It's also a faster ripper, but that'll wear out a drive quicker.

Another burner I have, I/O magic 16x- built by EMPA of Middle east FIZO had the booktyping packet, but those backups were piss-poor on stand alones. It's dash format way exceeded the dvd-rom format on my stand alones.

How about having a separate dvd-rom drive to go along with your burner? If you have the room for it. It should rip quicker and saves that dvd-rw drive a lot of wear and tear.

Edit: Impossible to tell until you run them through a disc ID program like dvdidentifier. Even those MID codes can be faked.Theres a code inside the dye, when you look at the bottom. Doc ty knows all about those codes and I don't think they can be faked.

That's why you get them from a reputatable store like rima/meritline/americal/and supermediastore.com. They have the real ty's.

the new Benq is an excellent choice, i'm actually going to try it out within a months time as well~ :)

if you order from supermediastore, i can pretty much assure you it's GENUINE Taiyo Yudens, i have thousands from them and never a issue with running into fakes, i will tell you however; i HAVE received FAKE TAIYO YUDENS from shop4tech.com, so, i would suggest you NOT consider them for your large TY purchase~ :)

in terms of a stand alone dvd-rom drive, i would suggest the Lite On 16P9S , check out this thread for more info~ :) i use my liteon drive to rip my movies, it's pretty fast, my pioneer dvr-109 is fast too (i use modified firmware, not official) :)

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/224718

good luck~

let me know once u get your TYs...i can and will authenticate them for you to relieve any worries you might have with all the FAKE TYs in the market these days~ :)

I recommend the benq 1640 as well. Look here. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827101651 or a lite-on SOHW-1693S or a sony DRU-800. The benq retail drives come with software to booktype but the oem drives don't. You will need to download the benq booktype management proggy or use another proggy to bitset/booktype on oem drives. For the lite-on and sony you will need to download the lite-on booktype utility or use some other proggy to bitset/booktype.

No the duplicator would have to be capable and set to booktype dvd-rom and you would have to use DVD+R media otherwise it would remain just DVD+R.

You're not intending on making backups to sale are you?

@oOoTyEoOo,

All genuine Yuden media are high quality media regardless of the speeds. Whatever you decided to get is all good regardless, so you don't really need to worry about getting any "coasters", unless it's an operator's fault. Additionally, all of Yuden are rank as #1 class media (top notch).

However, I, on the other hand, prefer the Yuden 8X DVD+R. With that being said, I can easily "book type" my DVD+R into a DVD-ROM format flawlessly (yes.. this is one of the safest format to go, especially if you have any 1 1/2 or 2 years old dvd player).

Sorry forgot to answer..no i do not plan to sell anything..But my brother and 1 other guy burns every dvd I do.....To make it easier on me, and my computer, they could simply put there dvd in there and copy it, without me. It would be less wear and tear in my computer as a whole, and all that. I don't sell any burned dvd's, and never will....

Thanks for the link!

got the email it shipped today....Hoping to get the discs asap so I can actually clear off my hard drive ....

I'd hate to burn anything else on memorex discs and have to do it again later.

The memorex discs I currently have, when I get the TY ones can I just copy them with nero dvd copier? I know some may have data errors, but they're not that old...Maybe 3 months ?

Those memorex backups may be a little more difficult to re-rip using Nero.
Try using DVD Decrypter in Mode ISO read and MODE ISO write. Too many errors on those backups and you'll get a crc error.DVD Decrypter is a more powerful ripper to help get through some of those errors.

i wish you the best of luck on the memorex re-rips~ :) it only took 3 months for MY memosux to deteriorate to the point of no return, so i am keeping my fingers crossed for ya~

i would also use decrypter to rip, iso read--->iso write as saugmon pointed out...i managed to get a FEW of my memorex discs onto TY discs in my time, but the rest were ALL landfill material, no luck there~ :)

Not only do you need good quality media to start with, you also need a quality burner. I got the HP 460c lightscribe with my current pc.Even using taiyo yuden, there were too many errors for me to re-rip those HP backups. Both my benqs and litey dvd-rom read crc errors on them. I haven't encountered any issues while re-ripping my benq backups onto the hard drive or on the fly. Just a quality difference in dvd burners.

Good luck on those re-rips!
