Ok. So I've read enough in these forums to know that most of you HATE Memorex media. I purchased a 50 pack of Memorex 16X DVD+R Discs when I purchased my Pioneer burner. I had 50 of them so I was NOT going to scrap them unnecessarily. So far, (I've only got 16 left) I've had no problems with them and so I wonder why everyone hates them so much? I read a previous post where it only burns at 4X, which mine also does but as I understand it, sometimes burning slower will get better quality than burning fast so I'm fine with that (takes about 1 hour to back up a compressed movie, about 30 mins to do one that doesn't require compression). As I said before, I've only got 16 left and I'm running through them quickly and will need to purchase more soon...soooo...why should I not buy Memorex again? Why buy Verbatim instead? I just want to know the reason. Also, one last question (sorry this is so long) is DVD+R better than DVD-R? That's the impression I get.
Thanks in advance!!

in a nutshell, the memorex media is made by cmc mag, basically the dye in their media will go bad after time and the disk is no longer readable.
in the verbs, they use (on some) advanced azo dye, which is far superior to memorex's choice of manufacturers.
dvd+r is used for newer pc burners and stand alone dvd players, the - format is more for older players/burners.
we can go on and on on this topic, but i just wanted to sum it up for you. as i am sure others will chime in with more detail. but you have the general idea. besides, they suggested media (verbatim, ty, fuji, sony) is not much more $$$ then the memorex. for example, every week at best buy and circuit city, they have sales, sometimes fuji (@ b/b) sells for 10 bucks for 25 or 20 bucks for 50........

Just to add to gear79 and my experience w/ them. They might burn now but give it some time they will usually degrade causing playback and copying problems no matter what speed you burned them at.
Backup's I made on them I decided to recopy and even after just a couple of months ran into CRC errors.
Try this program and identify the manufacturer of those Memerox - post back with this info - maybe you got lucky and bought ones made by a better manufacturer. Mine were CMC even the cd's.

Adding to what has been said, memorex buys their media from the lowest bidder (not always cmc mag) and you never who actually makes them from batch to batch untill you get home and ID them. You might have gotten lucky and got some made by ritek. You can ID them with this free proggy. http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

One advantage DVD+R media has over DVD-R is their ability to be booktyped to dvd-rom, most compatable format even with older set top dvd players. This can not be done with DVD-R media. IMO DVD+R has superior technology. Here's a good read. http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/113

How fast did you burn them? 4x?

How much was the 50 pack spindle of Memosux +16x?

Let me know the price and I'll tell you the difference!

There's some other high quality media out there besides verbatim, probably cheaper than those memosux.

Dvd + R or dvd - R:

Definitely the plus format if you have a quality burner with the bitsetting capability of booktyping the plus format to dvd-rom. Some of those cheapie/low quality burners with the booktyping capability still suck!

If you don't have a quality booktyping capable burner, then you're going to have to try both formats and see which format your stand alones prefer. If they don't like a certain format-off your burner, then you'll get a no disc inserted type of error. You have to find media/format that they like and stick to it.

Your pioneer could possibly booktype, but you'd have to have a special firmware.

Here's a good test for those backups. Try re-ripping them for another copy. If you have dual dvd-rom and DVD-RW drives, try re-ripping on the fly. If not, try re-ripping with DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter and see if they are successful. It also tests out how good your burner is. If you get crc errors, then something is wrong!!

Maybe later on you want to re-rip those copies and bam,you can't because of too many read errors. That's a good reason of not using memosux. You just can't trust cmc magnetics.

Thanks everyone for the info. You have been most informative. To answer questions posted...I used the identifier and the batch I'm using is manufacturer Prodisc. Is that good or bad? It's not CSC so I'm hoping it's good.
In the future I'll purchase one of the better products...Verbatim, TY, Fuji, Sony, Maxell. Especially since they shouldn't cost more. Will probably get them at Best Buy. That's where I get most of my electronics supplies. I'm willing to pay up to $30 for a 50 pack, that's still dirt cheap! I paid $17.99 for my Memorex's. They were on sale from $20. That's why I chose them, b/c they were on sale. No other reason. Maybe in the near future, I'll back up my backups...LOL...but for now, will concentrate on doing first back ups with new/better media.
The DVD+R seems to have worked well in all my DVD players so will probably just stick with that since it works. Not sure what booktyping is so don't know if I've done it or not.
As far as the speed of burning question goes, I just chose the maximum speen option and it automatically chose 4X so that's what I used.
Thanks again everyone!! I love these forums, they are super helpful for someone completely new and dumb about these things.

nlm1976, you should check out Supermediastore.com for media. You can get a 50 Pack of Taiyo Yuden (the best media you can buy) DVD+R's for $22.00 (100 Pack is $37.99). I haven't used them myself, but they seem to be the choice media among most people. I did order some Taiyo Yuden blank media though, so I'll be able to see how great they are myself.

Believe what is said here about memorex. I used them alot when I first starting backing up. The problem is, with memorex, you never know who actually made the discs. I've got some of my first backups that DVDIdentifier id's as ritek G05 and they still play and are burnable. I've also got some 6 month old backups done on cmc mags (sold as memorex) that are unreadable. They will decay rapidly over time. Spend a little more time finding good media (I use Taiyo Yuden exclusively with no probs whatsoever) and maybe a little more money but in the end you will be glad you did!

i'll be short and sweet this time as lately i seem to attract ppl who wanna argue in defence of bad media for the sake of it, so don't want to give any of them the excuse to come and drag the thread down. Having burnt something like 1500 Verbatims of various speeds/types (all done at 4x i hasten to add) i am confident in decent media as opposed to bad media. i also have 500 crappy media that are intermittently playable/re-copyable.

i've only used 100 Taiyo Yuden and 50 Ritek G05 but am confident in their quality so far.

Prodiscs are a little better than cmags. Still $18 for a 50 is too high on this lower quality media. I can get Riteks on Office depot 100 packs of 8x for under $30 when on sale.Office depot also have some great maxell sales, and verbatim on sale this week:50 pack for $20.
Staples is a good source for the maxells/sony/and fuji in that same price range of $18 and some of the sony and fuji plus is made by taiyo yuden.Best Buy is another store with good sales on good media.

You've come to one of the best sites to find the good quality media for the lowest prices.

I've been hearing that cmags were making the memorex 16x speed. Now prodisc are making them for them also in that 16x speed rate. That's the bad thing about memorex, those prodiscs are working ok for you,but next time you buy them-don't be surprised that they are CMC Mags and you may have problems.

Your burner will only burn them at 4x:
What's your brand name and model # of your dvd burner?

I have a Pioneer. I have a Dell computer so it's obviously aftermarket. The Pioneer box refers to it as DVR-509 but the manual and my logs say it's a DVR-A09XL/DVR-109. So not sure what the deal is with that. It's working well for me so I didn't make a fuss about it.
Today I bought my first spindle of Verbatim DVD+R 16X. A 50 pack...was $39.99 at Best Buy. Thought it was a little pricey but wanted to get something better this time and needed them now so didn't want to wait and shop around. Looked for something like 8X that might have been cheaper but they didn't have anything other than 16X. Thought about getting Fuji (b/c they were cheaper) but they were labeled as Fuji Film and I didn't know if that was the same as regular Fuji.
So anyway, that's the latest.

Fuji usually has Fujifilm on it. If buying Fuji or Sony always look for made in Japan - those are made by the better manufacturer's like Taiyo Yuden.
I usually buy all my discs online at:

Very good news! I returned something to Best Buy and found the DVD+R's that I was origninally looking for. The 8X. They were only $24.99. I only record at 4X so no point in having 16X for $15 more! So, since I haven't opened the 16X, I'll return them next week. I'm very excited. That's all I wanted to pay to begin with so was a little disappointed with the $39.99 that I ended up paying for 16X. Anyway, just thought I'd announce my happy news...LOL

gotta jump on the good deals, $40 for a 50 pack is DOUBLE the price you SHOULD be paying for them...as i mentioned above~ LOL good find nlm~
