Hello all, Recently I was sent a Taiyo Yuden (16x dvd-r printable) sample disc to try before I committed myself to buying a bulk order. I tried to burn a backup of a film to the disc and no luck i ended up with a coaster! I am new to this but i checked my firmware version for my dvd-rw drive (NEC ND3500 AG) and it was version 2.16, I went on to the NEC website and downloaded the latest version 2.1A and installed it. My question is has anyone else got this drive and burning Taiyo Yuden dvd-r media with it with success?? Any feedback and help on this matter much appreicated
Thanks

hi, welcome to AD~ :)

i have the next model up, the NEC ND3520A, and i have had NOTHING BUT SUCCESS on TY DVD-R media, i use the TYG01s (4x dvd-r), and they work like a charm...

i noticed you DO have the latest OFFICIAL firmware for your drive from the nec site, however, you MIGHT want to consider using a modified firmware that might prove to be more compatible at reading/writing onto the new 16x TYG03s...also, another thing i almost overlooked is that are you SURE you got AUTHENTIC 16x TYG03s? check the inner coding on the disc for me and please let me know the numbers on there...IF you got FAKE TYs, that COULD POSSIBLY be the reason why your drive is not recognizing them...also, what speed are you burning the 16x media at? i would suggest @8x MAXIMUM, even 4x to be on the safe side~ :) the most frequent problem i see when people use 16x rated media, is they BURN @16x~~!!! NOT A GOOD THING TO DO~ you are prone to SOOO many errors thus resulting in a "coaster" if you burn that fast~!

there are quite a few factors that could expose WHY you "ended up with a coaster", so, a little more info and i can guide you further in finding the issue here (whether it be the media, the program used to burn, or anything else...)

i am ALWAYS willing to lend a hand if you are using GENUINE Taiyo Yuden media, they don't call me docTY for nothing ya know~? hehehe

thanks for your reply, the number on the back of the disc is: GH000073, i used clone dvd 2 for the burn and it was set to record at maximum speed, could this be my problem???

I also have a NEC-3500. There is a lot of discussion on this site about Good and Bad media. I can tell what is good or not by how they burn in my NEC. Sony and Fuji 8X discs will burn at 16X. Most of the others that are 8X and are not recommended here, burn at 8X. Taiyo Yuden are on the recommended list , so why not buy some 8X, save some money amd the odds are they will burn at 16X.

Is that the number around the inner hub (hole)? Never burn at max. Like kiv said start at 4x and then if no problems try 6x or 8x. I never burn over 4x myself to to insure a good burn. 4 more minutes to burn vs possible coaster, I'll take the 4 minutes. Oh I consider a coaster to be any backup that freezes, pauses, has pixelation or doesn't play back perfect.

I'm not sure. We'll wait for doc TY (kivory) to answer for sure but the max burn speed could also be the culprit.

REAL~ :) definitely AUTHENTIC, i think it's the burn speed now, most likely if it's set @ maximum, your nec will burn these @16x since these are rated as such~ slow it down and you will be good to go~ :)

good luck~
