I am using the following:

BenQ DD DW1620 firmware B7W9
DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0
Fujifilm DVD+R 2.4x DL discs

Now, there's two things. My BenQ is an OEM drive, but when I flashed it recently I didn't know there were different ROMs for the retail and OEM version of the drive. When I flashed it the old ROM had the retail format version code, and it took the retail firmware just fine, and I can't flash it to the OEM firmware now because it gives an "incompatible firmware" error. So that's one.

Second, these discs have an RW logo on them, and when I put them in the drive, DVD Decrypter detects them as DVD+r DL - but when I try to change the book type DVD Decrypter seems to think they are DVD+RW. Nero reports them as non-erasable DVD+R DL.

I am trying to back up Xenosaga Ep I and Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance. I've been doing the following:

1. Put disc in drive.
2. Using DVD Decrypter, set Mode > ISO > Read
3. Capture disc image to hard drive.
4. Use Toxic 1.0 dual layer patcher on image (successful on both discs)
5. Put DVD+R DL in drive.
6. Using DVD Decrypter, set Mode > ISO > Write
7. Tools > Drive > Change Book Type > BenQ > Change Type For > Drive (for DVD+R DL Media) to DVD-ROM[1]
8. Burn at 2.4x (slowest speed available)

[1] Oddly, if I select Current Media, it says (for DVD+RW Media), but if I try to set the book type to DVD-ROM it errors out with a "this is for DVD+RW media, not DVD+R DL!" message.

The same thing happens on both discs, whether I set the Book Type or not: The burn proceeds up until the point where the layer transition would be (~50%), then my whole PC locks up, hard, for about ten minutes, then DVD Decrypter gives infinite write errors. One $5 coaster.

I've never had any problems burning any other kind of DVD on this PC. Sometimes the media don't always boot or the movies stutter, but I've never had any trouble burning them in the first place.

Does anyone know what the problem might be? Is it firmware related? Bad media?
