Poor quality discs or wrong settings in dvd shrink?

I just finished copying a dvd using dvd shrink.
However during playback on my pc it locks up for 15-20 seconds or so at different parts of the movie then continues playing. I then tried it in my dvd player and at these same parts of the movie I get the damaged disc symbol and it pixelates for a bit then continues.
The surface of the disc is fine and not scratched so what could be causing these errors.
Is it something not set right in dvd shrink?
Or is it due to poor quality discs? These were imitation brand DVD+R 8X discs. The wife brought them by mistake from Coles thinking they were cdrs.
Thanks.

More than likely it is bad media.
DVD programs will almost always give you an error message of some sort if there is a problem during the process. I assume you didn't get any.
Using a slower burn speed sometimes helps as well. 4X is what I use.
Over compressed movies will occasionaly do this.
Try and keep your compression as low as possible by unchecking unneeded audio tracks and subpictures. You can also Reauthor and remove everything but the main title. I'd change media first though, or at least try it at a slower speed with less compression.

If your backup freezes, stutters, skips, or has some pixelation, it is more than likely due to poor quality media being used. Cheap media is poorly manufactured around the edge of the disc, hence the reason why it mostly skips or freezes from the middle toward the end of the movie. The two main things to consider first are:
1. Is it cheap media that you are using? (ie. some off brand you bought at a local computer store/fair, even a store like Circuit City or Best Buy sells cheap low quality media.)
2. How fast are you burning? - Burn no faster than 4X, might have to go down to 2X with really cheap media.
Also, are you using adhesive labels on your back ups? If so, try removing the labels (if you can) and playing them again. Go here for more info on why not to use labels. - http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28604
You can go here for some other possible solutions: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44912
Also try lowering outcome the "Target DVD size".
Open DVD Shrink. Click "Edit", then "Preferences". On the first tab at the top in the drop down box, change it from "DVD-5 (4.7GB) to "Custom" and enter a number of 4200MB (4464MB is burning to the edge of the disc, you want to stay away from the edge as the edge of cheap media (disc's) are poorly manufactured). @jmet,
Why would you reduce the target size?
Quote: Also try lowering outcome the "Target DVD size".
If the problem were occuring at the end of the movie, then yes, lower the size a bit. Reducing the size from 4464 MB to 4200 is a reduction of 264 Mb. Quite drastic and usually unneeded. This does nothing more than increase the amount of compression needed.
I would reduce the size only on a case by case basis if it is determined there is a problem with the edge of the blank media... and not as a general rule.
Does the burn process fail at the end of the burn?
Do playback problems occur at the end of the movie only?
I actually use a larger target size than standard, 4474 Mb. I have not had a problem doing this using Taiyo Yuden 8X -R.
Originally this "solution" was applied to posts that did have bad edges, Princo, etc. Now it seems like everyone thinks it's a solution to general burning and playback problems.

Your right, 4200 is steep. Although, if they are not using "High Quality", it will only help the situation. The problem is most want a "Full Disc" backup and believe they can get it with good video quality at %60 or below compression without using DA or AEC. They want it fast, no waiting. Yet, they complain about the quality after they watch it. It doesn't matter what you put the "Target DVD Size" at, if they are using "heavy" compression, they are still going to get "poor" video quality.
On top of all of that, they want and buy the cheapest media they can get, yet expect "good" results from them.

Absolutely!
If people would use good media and reasonable burn speeds we would loose half our "customers" here!
When I started I bought expensive and crappy media from places like office depot. Hell, I was clueless. Now I get good stuff on line for about 1/4 the price and 4 times the quality.
Once we get them to use good media all we have to do is convince them to actually look the program over and see what it can do to improve the quality of the backup.

Thanks!
I remember the first DVD I didn't turn into a coaster. I was amazed it even worked. I started hanging out here because it was the good folks here that helped me. At some point I had more answers than questions. I still do a lot of research and I experiment with quite a few programs.
I don't know exactly how smart jmet is but he has been around long enough to be a Digital Digest Super Mod...I'd say he's pretty damn smart!
Cheers,
Frank
