Hi,

I was curious if anyone can assist me in determining which files constitute sound and video play back for the ads for other movies, warnings, and extras on a DVD.

The arrangement of therse items seems to change from DVD to DVD so to eliminate them from play something must probably need to be edited as well as deleted. Very often eliminating these items (as one can on some DVDs with DVD Shrink) allows compression to be minimized (thereby producing a better DVD backup).

Any direct instructions, suggested reading, or programs needed would be of help.

Thanks

Download DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink from this site (both free!).

Click on the link in my sig, and follow the instructions for both proggies.

When ready to encode (with DVD Shrink), go into "re-author" mode and click and drag the main title (this should be the movie itself). Tick/untick the languages and sub's that you want/don't want, and hit "Backup" you're good to go.

Good Luck!

Thanks konfused1, but I am sitll a confused one,

I have both of the programs you mention. I usually use Decrypter to produce a file on a hard drive and then use Shrink to compress the material as needed. Following your suggestion, do useless files also get transferred to the backup and if not will the movie run properly without the appropriate menus or other items noted in the file directing play (items that should be located prior to the actual movie files)? If not found, will the play program simply go to the next item?

So far I have just reduced these items to single frames and left the sound alone as I can not tell which sound files are for which video. This usually means the difference between a compression ration of 50 to 55 and one better than 75. Your help will make it cleaner and even better.

Thanks for the assistance. No rush for your response either. Take your time. I am, as you can tell, a slow learner.

When you open up the files that you extracted using DVD Decrypter, Shrink has a re-author button just like Konfused1 said. The re-author mode eliminates the original movie menus and makes the first title auto-play in most cases. By that i mean you put the movie in a player and it starts playing the main movie with no menus popping up first. The guides Konfused1 listed go in to more detail than this. The audio associated with the titles you drag over will be there in the final movie, and the audio is not compressed by shrink. Let me see if i can do a picture walk thru;
Here is what Frankenhooker looks like when shrink opens it. Btw this is not a good example as the original movie with extras fits on a DVD5, but the proceedure is the same;

Click on the reauthor button and the screen will change to this:
Go to the main movie in this case title 1 and click/drag it over to the DVD structure section on the left. Now shrink should look like this:
From there you just hit the backup button and away she goes.(well after it goes thru the burn settings)
You can drag other titles over there if this was a multi-episode disc like the Sopranos for example. Re-authoring can save you from having to compress so much as movies seem to come out with more and more extras on discs nowadays. To keep those extras, you have to loose some video quality on the main movie if the original DVD is a DVD9 and you are putting it on a DVD5. By all means go thru the various guides here. I was just trying to give you a quick visual guide, sort of like a guide that has gone thru DVD Shrink.. lol
@Konfused1 Hope you don't mind my joining in. I had to see what .png looked like as opposed to the .jpg i usually use on screen captures. You gave good advice, i just saw an opportunity to play with images again.. :)
BTW does anyone know why extra space is being added when i put a picture in the post? I am not adding extra spaces or anything and the image comes out wider than the size of the picture. It may be something with imageshack.us and how they host the pictures, but more likely it is something stupid i am doing..

@Hibernian:

Sorry, stepped out for lunch. Anyway, MaxBurn's instructions are right on. You should be fine just following them. As for your concern, once you take the main movie out for encoding (shrinking), that's all you really need. All the sounds and images are in that one file (technically speaking). Yep, hard to believe isn't it, but it's that easy.

@MaxBurn:

Nope, don't mind it at all, we all need to help each other around here, right. BTW, I think your screenshots are probably the reason why the message board, for this particular thread, is expanded more than usual. But who cares, if it means being able to help someone out, then so be it. Thanks!

@gurnard Hi back at ya :)
Thanks, a friend of mine sent that in an email and i had to have it in my sig here :). I think i might need to make it smaller but it is an animated gif, size 96kb and i am not sure how to do that. I read earlier in a thread where gurnard was getting his fish pic put up, but I lost the original thread message and have been guessing on how to resize the pic. If i get it fixed, i will just edit it in this post. I right click>> edited it with paint but it doesn't give me a resize option when i go to save it. I was also checking out the Safety Valve fourm and noticed some huge pics which got the Mods mad (for good reason) and i don't want to do anything to make mad Mods.. :) I have other programs than paint but haven't tried them yet. Until then, the cat is going to be a big mean cat... I have to go to work now, but i will check back. Until then Happy Burning everyone.. yes even the lurkers, i was one too once

You can also use vobblanker to blank everything execept the menu and the movie. its two clicks and prefer to using the dvdshrink method because it doesnt leave a still photo or a color screen. You can use it cut out FBI warnings and unwanted parts of the dvd. It actually reduces the size of the dvd so the compression is not as much. get it here http://jsoto.posunplugged.com/vobblanker.htm. Its a free program so give it a try.
