I have had strange luck with blank DVD's. Most x 4 work just fine. But it seams like whenever I buy disks that are x8 or higher, my DVD-writer will not recongnize them. Or it will start to write and then stop after a little bit with a media error. I have had this problem with all kinds of disks. So it is not just a specific media problem. I have been reading about Firmware. It sounds like this might have something to do with it. If i understand this concept correctly, I would download a program and it will allow my writer to read or write to blank disks it previously would not recognize. Is this the case? If so, is there just a generic program that I can download and install or do you need a specific kind for each DVD writer. I hope this makes sense because I'm pretty lost right now.
I'm at work so I dont have specs on the drive. I do know my computer is about 2 years old and the writer is x4 or x2.4 I cannot remember. Thanks alot for your help.

You should probably start out at the website of the burner manufacturer to see if they have firmware updates available for downloading.

A firmware update will help your drive read/write newer discs and burn speeds. It basically an .exe file that you run to flash your drive. Not hard really. You'll need to identify the make, model and current firmware version of your drive. You can do this w/ programs like Nero, Decrypter. Or you can download this program which id's your discs - it will also list your drive and firmware:

You can find your drives firware at the manufacturers website or here:

Your write errors can also be due to the media you are using. Make sure you are using quality media like Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim DataLifePlus.
