Is the disc the 5 movies on a dual or single layer? w/o compression, splitting or removing the extras I don't know how you'll get in on a single layer. What program are you using to copy? I'm trying to think of what else there could be.
(oh and I know your don't being difficult - no hard time intended)

sorry i don't understand how can you rip 6.5 gigs from a single layer disc? Surely you can only rip what is on the disc and the standard for that is ~4.3 gigs.
With all this hubub, i don't see why you can't use dvd-rb with CCE to get it to the target size. This results in near perfect copies...

still confused I would say that
1) it is double layer
2) if you want to back it up then you'll have to compress it/use DL media-expensive/use 2 disks.

If the disc is 6.5GB, then it is not a single layer disc.
Just run the disc through DVD Shrink to compress the data down. You may lose quality, but in order for it to fit on a DVD-5, it may be your only option.
