hi, i cant get past 2,600 to 2,700 kb/s transfer rate while backing up an original it takes around 50 to 60 minutes . here are the specs: p4-3.2ht,512ram,winxp-sp2 nothing running in the back ground. the drives are connected master ide-o 180gig, slave 200gig, ide-1 master plextor px-716a 16x with firmware update, slave 300gig. iv already checked the dma all are set to use it. not pio. iv done the force aspi with the latest ver. im using shrink 3.2 for this post but i also use 3.7 and 2.3. using nero 6.3.... from the hd takes 6 minutes...i have pioneer`s on my other machines and they take 20 to 26 minutes from the original. same times from the hd 6 minutes. what do yall think i need to do? thanks

do you mean 50-60 minutes to rip the dvd, or to do the whole process?

just the rip to the hd. i was just reading the slow speed post and i was rechecking my dma settings. the post said to make sure primary ide was mode 5 and mode 2 for the secondary ide .my secondary properties list " devise-0 current transfer mode is " multi-word dma mode 2". multi word?

if it's taking that long to rip, it must be ripping at about 1x or 2x...i have a similar problem (2x) due to Riplock...that could be affecting your drive, in which case you'll need to pick up a hacked firmware or something. do a search and see if anyone else has had this problem with your drive. thus far, you seem to have done everything correctly.

have you used any other program to rip, and get the same results? one way to narrow it down to HW or Shrink.

i have used DVD Decrypter same results. i just got thru updating my chip set, switched the plextor to a slave on the primary unplugged all the other drives switched movie. now the dma says mode 4 instead of multi-word. went to the firmware page and dl and installed the udates for the plextor as well. same 2,600-2,700 kb/s. could these drives be mismarked?

Probably as simple as "unlocking" the Plextor's read speed. I don't own one but I recall that they are locked at a fairly low speed, 2X I think.
You need to enable SpeedRead.........

From cdfreaks Plextor FAQs:
Quote:
Q: My Plextor DVD recorder only reads DVD-Video discs at 2x! Can't I make it go any faster than that?

A: Yes, you can 'unlock' the drive by making sure the drive is empty and closed. Then press and hold the drive's eject button for about three seconds until the drive's LED flashes green three times. Release the eject button so that the drive's tray will open. You can now insert a DVD-Video disc which will be read at full speed. When you eject the disc or when you cut the drive's power, the PX-708A / PX-712A / PX-716A will be reset to 2x reading again. Update: As of PlexTools Professional version 2.14 the Plextor DVD recorders can be unlocked via the "SpeedRead CD/DVD" option. This is the easiest way to enable SpeedRead.

I don't think it is such a great idea to be ripping with a burner though. If I were you I'd put one of those hard drives in an external enclosure, then hook up a $30.00 DVD Rom.

interesting point... is that the only dvd you have to read from? I typically read from a dvd rom drive and burn to a burner (plextor). That's probaby why I haven't experienced your slow reads... I will try it on my plextor burner and report out.

ok so I ripped (Italian Job) on my Plextor 708A; took 9 minutes and @ >7X read - started lower ~4X but continually climbed to almost 8X. I haven't done anything other than update the firmware to version 1.11, in other words not using plextools.

ok great, very happy for you! but lets take this a bit further... is it just that particular Plextor PX-716A that is in question? I have the PX-708A and a PX-712A and have never experienced this manifestation nor am I running any software other than Shrink, Decryptor, Nero.

Just curious that the thread could close on just that... I think it odd anyway.

@regor,
They had quite an extensive bit of info for the Plextor over at cdfreaks. I just snooped around until I found the Plextor faqs. I think only specific drives were locked, but not in all cases...You probably ought to take a look for yourself. I think a lot of what they had came right from Plextor so you may want to look there if you want more info, not that you need it.

@steveph1,
Congrats on your new PC upgrades. Should be a burning machine! You no doubt have enough ide and sata busses to get everything you need hooked up. I'd like to see a device map before I could even begin to guess what you have where.
