I'm fairly new to DVDs in general, but own a few movies on them. One of the major ones is the Babylon5 DVD set which contains a whopping 30 DVD-9s in total over five seasons.

I have a DVD drive that came with a new computer I bought recently. It's a dual layer drive, but i've ordered some discs that are single layer. Maybe it was a mistake, but the dual layer discs seem so much higher than singles.

I understand that some programs can compress DVD-9s to fit onto a single DVD-R disc. If I wanted to keep the menus, extras, etc, and re-encode it with reduced video quality, just how much worse would the picture quality be? Would it be unnoticeable, slightly noticeable, very noticeable? (I assume it does so by lowering the bitrate... does anyone know by exactly how much?)

thanks.

using dvd rebuilder together with a powerful encoder (procoder2 is the best choice for low bitrates) and some helpful filtering you can achieve decent backups even from serial dvds like the one mentioned

i have done some testing with stargate dvds and tales from the crypt and the quality can still be good when done properly

If you want to keep all the extra crap and burn to a DVD5 - the quality will diminish quite considerably.

Doing main movie only with DVD Shrink you should be able to get 4 episodes per DVD at good quality.

Have done West Wing seasons 1 to 6 on DVD5 (4 episodes per DVD)at high quality - did not include any extra crap.

shrink is the last thing to recommend when it comes to serial dvds

use an encoder to do the job or stay away from it

For serial disks I have just been splitting them up because you do lose a lot of quality. I did use Shrink in the beginning to compress the whole disk and it was not coming out good. These are TV disks so they do not have the quality of movies to begin with and compressing with Shrink made them worse. I finally started splitting with CloneDVD available from http;//www.slysoft.com because I could retain a fully functional menu on both disks. If you tried to do that amount of disks on dual layer you would be paying a fortune. As stated DVDRB will compress the whole disk with very minimal quality loss, however it is a long process but well worth the time, and you can batch process and RB will do several overnight while you are sleeping, My two cents

I agree w/ uncasm's on this w/ the use of rebuilder and the help of a couple friends here at ad you can have almost perfect copies of you dvd's

first how big is the t.v. you are going to watch it on I f it is not over 36 or so I say you might well never notice the quality loss unless you watch the whole movie in zoom or something!!

there are a lot of beta testers out there that love to tear apart these prog's and inspect every single nuance of the output!

but thought my first six months of back-up's (a couple hundred)
to tell the truth I did not notice any difference unless I actually did some thing wrong using the program

and alway's use the best media!

oh yeah I've heard that dvd fab will let you rip the dvd into two files for seperation onto two dvd-5's when I heard it I thought that it would be helpful for serial dvd's this would give you no loss except foruser error that you might inccur!

@l8nights

Good info on DVDFab Decrypter. I have not used it have not seen the need yet, but if it does seperate I may just try it out. There is a new ver just out on the site that is supposed to handle Lords of Dogtown, the beta testers say it works.

i dont think we're talking about the correct tool here

dvdfab DECRYPTER will not split the source iirc

DVDFAB, however, does

@UncasMS

You are correct I was thinking DVDFab Decrypter and it is the program DVD Fab that does this.

Thanks for the responses

Our TV is fairly moderate, around 26-28", not a widescreen (fairly old too, but it does the job well enough.) I've gotten into a habit of watching DVDs on the computer lately on occassion though.

I did notice that the Babylon5 series DVDs seemed to have quite a few artifacts(if that's the word), and also an overall grainy look compared to my other DVD movies. I guessed they weren't actually DVD quality to begin with but rather ported to DVD. not sure of the exact terminology for that.

I found an older post with some screenshot comparisons of encoded backups to originals and am pleased to see how identical the backup looked to the original. I was worried that compressing it down so much would make a huge dent in the picture quality.

@mo24 the series dvd's are quite large files requiring a huge amount of editing out stuff or huge amount of compression this might be ok on the older set try it out if youdon't like the quality or if youwould like to bypass the trial &error (I would) go for the dvd-rb look in my sig for instructions to get you started w/ rebuilder (dvd-rb)

if you are undecided try this link to see quality differences but remember the screen size will amplify differences in quality compared to your monitor and your "serial dvd's" will need more compression (more quality loss)than a regular movie as depicted longer loading times are to be expected.

here is that link> difference between shrink and dvd-rb illustrated > http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=55332
