Recently my aged V4 PS2 began having trouble reading from any sort of media. Finally, a few weeks ago, it stopped reading discs altogether, be they DVD, CD, CD-R, DVD-R, etc...
I read about the DRE problem on this site and went about correcting the problem by taking the unit apart (which I'd done once before to install a no-solder mod), removing the cover of the cd-rom and adjusting the white cog. Upon testing the PS2, something odd happened - the menu screen came up, but the little swirly globes that normally coalesce and then break into an orbit simply came together to form a bright, stationary orb. The unit will not boot any sort of disc. The laser still comes on with its red glow and attempts to read, but with no effect.
Firstly, what is the significance of the glowing orb? I have thoroughly inspected the unit and the motherboard and nothing appears to be blown, burnt-out, or shorted; other than mild dust contamination I can find nothing visibly wrong with the unit.
Secondly, is this something I can repair myself or will it have to be serviced or replaced?
Before I posted this I searched through the archived posts for quite some time to see if the question had been asked and answered. I did find a few instances where people had run into the same problem with the swirly lights. Unfortunatly, the answers they recieved were along the lines of "LOL!!!111" and "dood git a xbox cuz ps2 sux xbox 4eva dawg". Please do not reply to this post unless you have a genuinely helpful answer. I would rather see the question go unanswered than have it followed up with spam.
