Recently my aged V4 PS2 began having trouble reading from any sort of media. Finally, a few weeks ago, it stopped reading discs altogether, be they DVD, CD, CD-R, DVD-R, etc...

I read about the DRE problem on this site and went about correcting the problem by taking the unit apart (which I'd done once before to install a no-solder mod), removing the cover of the cd-rom and adjusting the white cog. Upon testing the PS2, something odd happened - the menu screen came up, but the little swirly globes that normally coalesce and then break into an orbit simply came together to form a bright, stationary orb. The unit will not boot any sort of disc. The laser still comes on with its red glow and attempts to read, but with no effect.

Firstly, what is the significance of the glowing orb? I have thoroughly inspected the unit and the motherboard and nothing appears to be blown, burnt-out, or shorted; other than mild dust contamination I can find nothing visibly wrong with the unit.

Secondly, is this something I can repair myself or will it have to be serviced or replaced?

Before I posted this I searched through the archived posts for quite some time to see if the question had been asked and answered. I did find a few instances where people had run into the same problem with the swirly lights. Unfortunatly, the answers they recieved were along the lines of "LOL!!!111" and "dood git a xbox cuz ps2 sux xbox 4eva dawg". Please do not reply to this post unless you have a genuinely helpful answer. I would rather see the question go unanswered than have it followed up with spam.

i would keep fooling with the laser adjustment. and also
try cleaning it while your in there.
The answers i saw to this in another post where odd
they said to just hit the PS2 on the back a few time
but they claim it fixed the problem.

Yeah just follow Steimy's advice about cleaning the laser and you should be fine. I have a v.4 PS2 and cleaned it after it wouldn't read a brand new Family Guy DVD. The main thing to watch for is not destroying the eject ribbon, however since you installed a no solder modchip, you already know that. I pose a question to you: is the no solder mochip difficult to install and how well does it work? I am considering getting one and after looking at the directions, yikes looks like I'm a snippet away from being PS2less! Anyway cleaning your laser should resolve the problem, Good Luck.

from what i hear the install insn't that bad and
the person i know who has one loves it
settle for nothing less than a DMS4 EZI chip
there are many out there that are just junk.
It will do pretty much everything the soldered in chips will
do some research on it and see what you think.

Regarding the no-solder mod: They're easy to install, you just gotta be careful with that eject-button ribbon. However, I'd advise against them, since they're really just a glorified swipe-card. You'll still wind up with plenty of backups that can't be booted in your system. I only bought the no-solder mod because a)it was cheap, and b)nobody in the area where I lived at the time carried a soldering iron proper for doing those minute solder jobs.

I've cleaned the laser, but it still won't work. I even cracked open a friends ps2 and compared the POTs to make sure mine were turned to the correct setting but no dice. Hell, I even pulled the laser unit out of his ps2 and put it in mine; I still got that single glowing orb at the menu screen. Of course, his ps2 is a V9, so maybe the V4 just doesn't like his laser. Oh well, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna have to get a new one at this point. Which really sucks because I won't be able to afford it for about the next six months... guess I'll have to brush up on my Gamecube skillz.

Thanks for the info Zeshadow, I definitely don't need a glorified slide card. You ever thought of playing thru your PS2 games on emulator until you can get a new one? For downloads, check here: http://ngemu.com/ps2/index.php Of course you'll need the PS2 bios (think Google) to play em, but at least it could be a stopcap solution.
