Hi everybody,
I just got a computer with a DVD burner and I have not yet burned a DVD, I have been reading about it on here for a while. I purchased Video Vault (with DVDXPlatinum) as a burning software. I know that I also need a decrypter. However, I cannot decide which one I need to use (DVD43, DVD Decrypter, AnyDVD). Any advice? Also, do I need DVD Shrink? I am not sure what this does in relation to the Video Vault software, or if it is even necessary. I know very little about compression, but does Video Vault/DVDXPlatinum do compression, or do you also have to use DVD Shrink?
thanks!!!! :-)

Hi inkybrown,

Welcome to afterdawn. First thing for you to know is the difference in the softwares you mentioned...DVD Decrypter rips the movie to your hard drive and you can use it to burn the ripped dvd files. For older movies all you need is DVD Decrypter which can circumvent older dvd protections. DVD43 and AnyDVD bypass the copy protection and descramble to dvd output so when you are ripping the dvd to your hard drive it is the same as the files on the dvd. Most folks will say AnyDVD is better as once you purchase it you get free lifetime updates. Unfortunate that you bought dvd xcopy platinum ( I assumed bundled with video vault) as it has yet to be able to backup the movies coming out recently with sony ArCoSs protection. AnyDVD will beat that protection and is often updated as new movies come out with the "latest" attempt to stop dvd copying. Another program that may be of interest to you s dvd fab decrypter as it has been pretty stable in the ability to rip files from certain dvds that DVD Decrypter (free version available in the software tab at the tp of the page or do a searh here) can't do as it is no longer updated. Also I suggest if you are going to invest in additional software you buy the combo of anydvd/ clonedvd2. For the 59 dollars you have the ability to re-author and compress the entire dvd to fit on a blank dvd using clonedvd2 while AnyDVD works in the background removing the copy eprotection. They both have a 21 day trial period so you can check it out for yourself. DVD Shrink also is a great compression utility but is no longer updated. Once again for some of the older movies it can rip, re-author and compress to fit a store bought dvd. The files you choose using DVD Shrink re-author or copy entire disk can then be burned by your choice of dvd burning software. Use the guides tab to read up on a few of the software that you mentioned as well as the first link in my signature both are excellent in learning how to backup your dvds. Hope this brief explantion was clear. Reply back if you need more help and to let us know how you are getting along once you start backing up your dvds.

to burn or not to burn that is the question
