Hey guys, I'm a veritable newbie when it comes to this stuff, but I've looked at every FAQ, and done everything I can and I still get the "can not open or unsupported" error when I try importing my xvid avi as a video source. I put Directshow multimedia file reader and AVI VFW as my top two priorities, I know I have the right codec because I installed ffdshow and GSpot tells me I have the codec, and yet I still can't open the file. What am I doing wrong?

You may still need a proper XviD codec.
Try opening it in VirtualDub, and see what happens.
If vdub will open it, try frameserving.

Okay, when trying to open it in VDub it say " Can't locate decompressor for format 'xvid'". So I don't have a proper codec? But why does gspot and ffdshow tell me I do?

EDIT: Okay, I got koepi's codec, and I can open it in VDub now, but still not in TMPGEnc.

Okay, so I got the frameserving to work, but now in TMPGEnc When I preview, I don't see my subtitles. I'm following this http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/divx_to_vcd.cfm FAQ on burning an XviD to VCD with subtitles. I have the XviD, .SRT file and and .VDR file all in the same folder with the same name, with the exception that the filename for the srt file has .srt on it, because if I just name it the same as the movie without the extension, I can no longer see the subtitles when I play the movie.

When Putting Subtitles on to DVD you Should add them when you are authoring the Mpeg-2 file to DVD Not when you are encodeing the XviD to Mpeg-2(Well you can add them while encodeing but it is better to add them when you are authoring the DVD this way they are selectable)....

So first you would encode your XviD File to Mpeg-2 and then you would need a DVD authoring program that Supports subtitles Like "MediaChance DVDLab Pro" ..You would then Just Load in the Mpeg-2 file as the Video Source and then load in the Subtitle File as your Subtitle source and then you will need to make a Link on the Main menu so you can Turn them On and Off and you will have the Option to Change the Font and Color and Position of the Subtitles...

After you have authored the Files to DVD you Just Put it in your DVD Player and Turn on your Subtitles with your Remote controll and then watch the Movie....

Cheers
