Okay, I've been ripping/burning movies for a while now, but I've hit a snag. For some reason when I play them on my standalone player, around the midway point of the movie, I start getting some skips. Usually only 2-3 seconds, but definite skips. After a few, it will usually play normal for about a minute, and then the skips will start again. Sometimes they even cause the disk to stop.

Now, if I play the disk on my PS2 or on my PC dvd burner/player, they work just fine. It's only when I use my standalone player.

I'm currently using DVD Decrypter to rip and burn the movies, DVD Shrinker if they need compressing, and IMG Tool to make the ISO's. (I know that Decrypter can do that as well, but old habits die hard.) The blank disks I use are not necessarily top of the line, but they're not too shabby, either.

I just don't understand why they would play just fine on my PS2 and PC, but not on the standalone. And brand new movies play perfectly, so I know the player isn't buggy.

Any help or advice would be MOST appreciated. I have a rather extensive collection now of the burned movies, and would hate to start over.

It very well could be the quality of the disc. Also, are the disc +R or -R, is the player older or newer. Older players are -R, newer players are the other or are multi-format. If you've been using the disc you have successfully up til now, you may have gotten a bad batch. To avoid this, start using quality disc like Taiyo Yuden(best), Ritek, Ridata, Verbatim to name a few.

I was afraid it might be the quality of the disk. To be honest, I got a bulk deal from Ebay for the disks. I wrote to them to make sure the disk was of good quality, but I guess they might not be good enough.

My DVD player is relatively new, and is renowned for playing EVERYTHING, including DVD+ and -R, DivX, etc. Here is the BestBuy link: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=6373827&type=produc...

Now, on that page it says that it only plays DVD+R's, and not -R's. Would that be the problem? I've heard that if it plays +R's, it will play the others. And wouldn't it have problems starting out instead of halfway through the movies? As I said, it plays store bought DVD's perfectly, and it plays some of the burned DVD's straight through without a problem. I've just noticed that some of them have the skips, and it seems like all of the recent ones are skipping.

Does that sound like a blank DVD quality issue? And do you know why it would play on my PS2 and my computer without problems?

Again, thanks for helping out! Out of curiosity, how much do the better quality disks cost?

Ach so!
I've been reading around a bit, and just read a few posts about labels on the disks causing some problems. I have labeled all of my burns with the white adhesive labels. Although I'm pretty sure they're as centered as can be, the symptoms that a lot of people are associating with labels are exactly what I'm experiencing.

I verified a movie last night, and the data on the DVD is fine. I'm going to try the label removal when I get home later tonight. Here's hoping!!

crzyivn ,
If you are using (-) blank DVD's to play on that unit the unit is not supposed to play that type. Who ever told you if the DVD Player plays (+) dvd's then it will play (-) dvd's is wrong. You problem is being caused by the media you used. As to why it plays on the PS2 most of the older PS2 consoles like (-) DVD's. Your computer does not care what type of format the DVD is in as they usually read both.
The reason it plays store bought DVD's is that they are DVD-Rom's

Actually, now that I think about it, it was while I was reading reviews of the system that someone said that it plays -R's, and that the specifications just didn't list it. It's been a while, but they had some notification from Philips that the player does play the -R's.

Plus, wouldn't it be a problem from the outset it it couldn't play -R's? Meaning, wouldn't it have troubles reading the disk instead of playing just fine for an hour or so before skipping?

Suspect 99% that stick on labels are your problem. They are fine on CD's, from what I hear, but a nightmare on DVD's!

Try buy that epson printer that prints on "printable" surface dvd blanks. Or just label your disks with a suitable marker and use all that extra time you are spending on disk art for lovemaking! ;-)

LOL
DARN good advice. :)

So now I'm trying to get the labels off of a couple of my DVD's that I know were giving me troubles. The first attempt... errr... did not go well. I got off most the label with some warm water, but it left all the sticky stuff behind. So I tried some alcohol to get off the sticky stuff, but that just made things a billion times worse. Spread the gunk all over the place and ended up ruining the disk.

Any good suggestions to getting the label off easily? Or, at the very least, without ruining the disk?

I know there is some stuff called "Goo Away" (hardware store?) made for taking price tags off some products like glass or metal but it is petroleum-based so I don't know how plastic surfaces would react (I'd try it on the disk you already ruined first). And it stinks! Windex, ammonia? I would have thought alcohol would have done it.

One thing about alcohol, the solvent evaporates real quick and your are just left rubbing water that still has an alcohol smell. I live in L.A. and we have a store called Walgreens here. They sell a 91% bottle of alcohol which has much more solvent than the typical 70% alcohol.

You've only got to get one label off one problem disk to see if that indeed is the prob. If that isn't the prob, then switch media. Don't waste your time on cheap media. They are really not THAT cheap compared good media bought in bulk or on sale. I like the sony 8X -R blanks which go on sale often at compUSA; others above have suggested their favorites.

Last resort: pull out the original DVD again or if your computer still plays the labeled disks, and back them up again!

Thanks for the advice!
They actually sell stuff at Staples/CompUSA/Office Depot that is specifically made to get labels off of media. I am going to try that stuff. But before I spend the money, I am going to backup one of my disks that I know skips on to a new blank DVD and see if it plays through without a problem. If it does, I can safely assume that the label is the problem, and I will look into label remover stuff.

Cheers again for the help! I came to the right place.

Good advice. Stay away from the stick on labels. They will only cause problems even with top notch media sooner or later. Been there done that. I now only use hub printable media and an epson R200 printer. Your problem also could be media related and probably is. Use this free proggy to ID your media and let us know what they ID as. http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

Just a quick follow-up.
I took the label off of a DVD that was skipping, and it played through perfectly. I did the same with two others, and they have also completely lost their skipping. So it looks like it was officially the labels causing the problem.

Who would have thought?

Thanks again for all of your help! Now I just need to figure out a good, quick, and clean way to get off all of the frickin' labels.... :)

And for the record, I downloaded the DVD Identifier, and I have Taiyo Yuden DVD-R blank disks. Cheers!

Who on eBay did you buy from? Tons of fake Taiyo Yuden's on there....post the auction number and I'll check it out....

Also look at the hub serial # on the purple side...hopefully you won't find T1017.....

:)

that's why i ALWAYS tell people to never 100% trust those software dvd identifier programs as being completely accurate, those MID codes are EASILY faked as well as the place of origin, in this case, Taiyo Yuden Co. LTD~ etc. etc...

anything from ebay in bulk is suspicious, especially media...for the supposed "Taiyo Yudens" that you got from ebay, IF they are in the DVD-R format, the inner coding on the hub MUST start with a GD (4x dvd-r) or GG (8x dvd-r) followed by numbers in the following format:

GD00xxxx or GG00xxxx (where xxxx are NUMERICAL values pertaining to the batch number of those particular discs) :)

i knew i heard TY mentioned,

docTY out for the night~ :)

I don't have a link to the official auction I won (it was about 4 months ago), but here is a similar link from the same seller:

Errr... the link wouldn't work right. Anyways, it's item number 8700539506.

When I get home tonight, I will check on the hub numbers to see if I got genuine TY or not. But to be honest, I have not had a single coaster yet since I bought the DVD's. The only problems I've had have been with the skipping/overheating, which I just found out is due to the labels. So unless I get failures out the wazoo all of a sudden, I'm happy with the DVD's I bought.

THe auction listed doesn't mention TYG02 anywhere...if this is the same as the ones you got they are fakes. The manufacturer "SKY" is not Taiyo Yuden....please post a hub code to make sure.
