Could you please explan yourself somemore. Can you even boot up your XBOX? to start with. Which Dashboard are you useing? e.g. EvoX, Avalauch, UIX or XBMC?

Are you getting an Error Screen i.e. "Please call M$ Support...", if so what's the Error Message? At the TOP LEFT OF YOUR SCREEN?!?!

What are the temps of the box when it shuts off? The xbox should shutdown at about 70-75 degrees celcius as a safety feature....maybe look at your fans. Also you might have a bunk bios....you could try to reflash,if possible.

@andersg

Theer are currently eight different Models avalible. they are listed as beeing Version's 1.0 though 1.6a and 1.6b. The main difference between these different Versions is by which Video Encoder Chip, Microsoft has choosen to use at the time.

v1.0 ~ v1.3 Had a Connextant Chip
v1.4 ~ v1.5 had a Focus Chip
v1.6a ~ v1.6b Has a Xcalibur Chip

So in this respect it's vital to know what your dealling with! As useing a Firmware that was not intended for your Hardware will cause you to look at a 'Dark Screen'.

There were some other finer changes made to the PSU aswell, as some of the extra Fans removed to cut down on the Noise level on the latter versions.

I think in so far as i know by Hearsay, that the v1.6a/b's are more problematic then the rest of the bunch. As every XBOX? from v.1.0 through v1.5 had a TSOP (i.e. a BIOS Chip), that sat just under the DVD-ROM Drive. Now I don't have a v1.6 and I don't need one either! But, my understanding is that these XBOX's?, do not have a TSOP Chip on them.

It seems that M$ in whatever effeort was left to 'em thought to place the Firmware to a Writeable Space on the nVidia MCPX Chip. Which may or may not be like it was with the older TSOP Chips. Writeprotected.

In anycase the v1.6a or b, is more of a pain in the Arse to Mod., then say a good v1.0 ~ v1.5...

How do i tell wich version of XBOX I have?. I was thinkin about buying one so i could mod it and then back up some games i have becuase the one i had recently caught fire in the back of the powercord even though i got one of the power cord replacements that M$ issued. I'm still not sure whether to pay out the money for a XBOX and a modchip or should i just wait until the Xbox 360 comes available becasue i already have that pre-ordered at the EBGames store. The only reason i considered buying a XBOX right before the Xbox 360 was released was so that was the fact that i dont know if it i possible or will even become possible to mod a Xbox 360.

I thought I mentiond something about a Video Encoder Chip! Unfortunatly an XBOX? is an XBOX? is **NOT** an XBOX?. There are some fine differences, but you'd couldn't really tell 'em apart unless you have One of the Specials' like the Gaylo Umm sorry Halo... Green which IIRC was either a v1.4 or v1.5. Again IIRC it has to fall into that range as the Halo Green had the Focus Chip in it.

That's the only 100% way to do it. However, you might be able to work out which version XBOX? you have by looking at the Serial Number. More Infos, Here http://www.xbox-scene.com/versions_0.php.
The problem is this info is outa Date, and even at the best of times it was never a 100%, more like a 55~60%

Will it be possible to Hack a 360° on the First Day? Ummm HELL NO?!? Would be my guess. Will it be possible in say the Fist Six Months or so? Hummm unlikely.

IIRC: The XBOX? came out in 2000/2001 the first Modchips didn't show up untill like a Year and a Half latter! Thanks to the research done by Andrew "bunnie" Huang, and then we're still only talking about the 29-Wire / 11-Wire Chips. Chips like the X-B.i.t.Soderless didn't come till almost a Year after that 2003. The current all-in-wonder LCD loving Chips almost another year latter 2004.

So going on that Timeframe I wouldn't expect to see the 360° broken untill 2007 at the earliest!

If you could Mod the 360 the only thing that you would be able to do that is any different is play backed-up games. They pretty much add all the stuff you could do, so now most of it is legal
exp. Upgrading the harddrive.

flashing the bios is technically illegal, anyway...playing backups is too, i believe, with current methods as you have to circumvent copy protection.
