I am trying to backup a dvd and when I put the dvd in my Plextor 716a drive DVD DECRYPTOR gives me a Tracking Servo Failure error. This works on my other dvd drive so I am leaning towards a Plextor dvd drive failure etc. Any help would be great. The drive is updated to Firmware 1.08

duff drive is always a possibility, however this can always be caused by duff media. download dvd identifier (free) from here - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id... and identify the media and paste details here.

in the meantime pls edit out your email address via pencil icon at top right of the post, it's against forum rules and makes you target for spammers

I have a PX-708A that is just starting to do just that. But the drive a been good, its two years old, an I'm starting to get a lot of Servo Tracking errors .... I bought a NEC 3520A a while back and it ROCKS, burns 4.7 with Nero in 6 min with TYG01 (4X) discs using DB firmware.

Thinking about getting this NEC 3540A ($40, Free Shipping), NO ... I'm gonna get it !

I'm using a Plextor Writer (PX-716UF) and having trouble as well. Each time I attempt to burn a Double Layer (DL) DVD with Toast Titanium 6, I get to where there is less then 1% left to complete and the writer stops right before finalizing the disc. The error message states: "Sense Key= Illegal Request, Sense Code= 0x72, 0x04 Empty or partially written Reserved track." I have no clue what this means, the DL Discs that I am using are Verbatim's with 8.5GB. I have seriously gone through about 10 now. My first thought was that the DVD I was burning must of had some type of security code and that was why there was an "illegal request" but I have trouble several DVDs now, all varying in size and still have the same error. I am using a G5 (mac) with OS 10.2.8. Any suggestions?

nothing fishy here....I have several Plextor drives, PX-716A and (2)PX-708. ALL now have this tracking servo problem. No it's not a coincidence either. I also have a SONY DRU 510 and (2)SAMSUNG TSH H552U. The latter drives have been solid performers from day 1. I am a system builder with no ties to any company. These are my personnal experiences.Plextor has not performed for me as advertised.

I don?t understand why a thread would be considered ?fishy? simply because another Plextor user has not experienced the same problem. I swear the issue I stated above is truly what I am experiencing, I have found others with similar issues at other forums that never received responses or suggestions so that is why I posted here. By how fast jrg9662 and myself have responded to the last thread should be proof enough that we are just Plextor owners who are eager for an answer and nothing more? I am a bit shocked that Senior members treat newbies like this? what a welcome.

With such responses from "senior" members makes me wonder "there" motives. We are not the only ones to experience the SAME problems with Plextor burners. I toot no one horn or wave any one flag. I report it as it is. I thought I would get some positive feedback to my issue here at Afterdawn but I am turned off by responses. Aren't we here to help each other? I will now refrain from reporting my problems here. Sad but true.

I have a Plextor 716UL and have burned about 30 Dual Layer disks with it and had no problems. If you are having problems with the drive then do as aabbccdd suggested and contact Plextor, they are very good with support.

After the rude response from that SENIOR MEMBER (tsk tsk tsk... what a shame) I posted my issue elsewhere and was encouraged to get more RAM. I didn't have much RAM as it was so I think this might be the answer for my issue, if the rest of you have little RAM you may want to try upgrading as well.

To all,

A tracking servo error is a mechanical problem dealing most often with hardware settings, a dusty lens or the media being used so adding more RAM, while excellent for overall system performance, will most likely do nothing for the issue at hand.

Things to check would be,

Make sure your drives are in DMA. DMA is a high speed transfer rate for ATA devices and is required for optimal performance of your drives. The other transfer setting is PIO which is very slow and sure to cause problems with todays high speed devices. You can check your DMA settings by following the instructions at this link,

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/storage/IDE-DMA.mspx

If by following the instructions from that link your drive still won't go into DMA you can reinstall the drive through Device Manager which can cure a surprising amount of problems. Here's how,

Go to Device Manager >

Expand the tree for DVD/CD ROM Drives >

Find the drive in question, right click it and go to Properties >

Under the Driver tab, select Uninstall then OK.

Now reboot and Windows should detect and reinstall the drive.

If this doesn't help try the same steps as above except expand the tree for IDE ATA/ATA Controllers and uninstall either the Primary or Secondary controller depending on which one the drive in question is attatched to. Nero Info Tool can tell you which chain the drive is on under the Configuration tab.

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/nero_inf...

A dirty/scratched disc and/or a dirty drive lens can also cause tracking errors. If the drive can't get a clear look at the disc it's trying to read or burn then it'll go into fits and throw out several different errors depending on the drive's mood :P The obvious answer is to make sure the disc is clean and scratch free and to make sure the drive's lens is clean. Dust gets into the drive in no time so I first recommend using some canned air and carefully blow out the guts of the drive. If this doesn't clear things up then you may want to get a cotton swab wet with 95% or above isopropyl alcohol a gently swab the lens. It can be a real booger getting to the lens on some drives so it may take some time and patience to get to the lens. Another option is to buy a lens cleaner at an electronics store. They look like a regular disc except they have a small brush on the underside that swipes the lens as the disc spins. I think they work pretty decent but others claim they only smear the dust around the lens so it's up to you whether you want to try one or not.

Tracking servo errors are not endemic of just Plextor's drives. I've seen them happen with just about every make and model drive :)

Alita99

If you're consistently getting an error such as yours at the very end of the disc you may want to reduce the target file size by ten or fifteen megs. The very edges of DVD media are notoriously inconconsistent and will often cause problems :)

Hi Guys, just a quick note from Europe.

I do not know if the people here are mainly from the US or UK, but it has been publicized in several European computer magazines (PC Magazine, Dutch version for instance) that a lot of Plextor DVD drives that came out in the US market unfortunately do not have the high quality that Plextor is known for.

Especialy the PX-716A drives that were marketed in the US seem to have a lot of problems. These problems were fixed for the European market.

Like most manufacturers, Plextor also buys it's drives from BenQ (for example the PX-740A). Notice: you can recognize this usually, because then Plextor does not include their own software called "Plextools".

Now: the firmware is key! Many drives that are physically 100% the same, and just have other brandnames do have different firmwware. But normally Plextor does make it's own firmware.

Problems like this should not occur. However: sometimes you can fix it with new firmware cause this sometimes seems to "calibrate" the drive again.

Also note that sometimes problems like this might also occur with DVD's that have the same brand-name but do come from different factories. Example: TDK has several factories and you can have DVD's that look exactly the same but still come from different factories.

Normally Plextor is a very good brand (but a bit pricy).

Most drives come either from Philips/BenQ or Lite-on.

My advice: depending on how old the drive is, either try new firmware or try to see if you can get some extra warranty from Plextor...

ps: sometimes you can "cross-flash" a drive: say you have a Philips DVD but is actually a BenQ (hardware) then sometimes BenQ does have a newer firmware that is compatible..

This off course is without any warranty ;-)

I flashed my Pioneer for instance with a region-free version ;-)

Thx for the info Nephilim, before I waste another DL disc (these things get pretty expensive), I want to make sure I understand you correctly? you recommend that I reduce the size by 10 to 15 megs, even though the disc holds 8.5GB and what I am burning is only 7GB? The reason why I was kinda leaning towards it being an issue with my RAM is because I only have like 512K, and I thought because the disc completes everything but the final finishing (the "lead-in" track, I think it is called), I figured it was running out of memory right at that point. Also depending on how many programs or applications I have up at the time, causes the time of the error to vary; for example, if I am doing nothing but running Toast and burning the disc it will make it to the final finishing step before it cuts off with the error message, but if let's say I am surfing the web and have Word open and a couple other programs, the disc may only make it to 75% finished before displaying the Sense Code message. I promise I am not trying to argue with you, (I?m not much of an arguer but that kid got on my nerves) I just want to make sure that I understand.

@Alita99 - no wonder you're having problems. You should never touch the computer (Mac or normal computer) during the burn phase. Period.

ps pls maybe edit that last post of yours to avoid causing more arguments

With all due respect: that is a load of (censored):-)

Ever heard of multi-tasking and "burn-proof" ?

I happen to own both Mac and PC's and have burned shiploads of DVD's/CD's and ever since they have made CD/DVD writers use the burn-proof technology you do not get buffer-underruns anymore because you do other stuff while burning...

If you do then I guarrantee you its another problem.

'fraid i'll politely disagree with hyou there. burn-proof is not all it's cracked up to be. i've watched the buffers go crazy in Nero whenever i've surfed/kicked off torrents - whenever i've CRC checked the discs in question after the burn - CRC errors at that part of the disc. I can't speak for Mac burning, but on PC's that's happened to me a few times.
