Well I am having the tracking servo problem from the get go. When I load the source disk DVD Decrypter opens up automatically it finds the disk then gives me the error message at the bottom of DVD Decrypter. I also have 2 gigs of DDR. I will move the drive to another pc and check it out that way. The hunt goes on................

Quote: 'fraid i'll politely disagree with hyou there. burn-proof is not all it's cracked up to be. i've watched the buffers go crazy in Nero whenever i've surfed/kicked off torrents - whenever i've CRC checked the discs in question after the burn - CRC errors at that part of the disc. I can't speak for Mac burning, but on PC's that's happened to me a few times.
Well, that's it: you're clearly talking about a software problem there: that means there is a conflict.
It's not the drive ;-)
And towards Mac: I use OS X which is based in BSD Unix. It's rocksolid and even with 512mb I can do anything while burning.
On XP: I even played games while burning: the DVD got burned at 2speed rather than 8x but it still came out great...

I gather this is a Plextor drive too?
Do you only have this with a particular DVD or with any movie?
Can you play it normally with software - for instance - PowerDVD?
If you can play it and watch it, then you can be sure it is NOT your DVD drive!
It just means that DVD Decrypter isn't compatible with that particular DVD. DVD Decrypter has not been updated in a while because the author has been sued and discontinued it: hence you will find more and more DVD's you can't rip with it.
Also find out if there is a newer firmware for your drive and also check if you can cross-flash it.
Crossflashing means you use the firmware of the original manufacturer of the drive: sometime Plextor buys its hardware from BenQ and they might have a newer and more compatibe firmware then Plextor.
This last thing is at your own risk though!

@f0xmuld3r - we'll have to agree to disagree (ie we have different experiences). i have no software issues and after 2000 perfect copies (plus the 500 FAKE discs i got when i started out in the dvd burning game, that are a mix of faultless burns and CRC-filled, uncopyable/unwatchable horrors) i know buffer underruns when i see them.
However differences in experience apart, what's most important here is what's recommended to either newbies starting out, or newbies who come here as they're already having problems - ie to recommend mutltitasking during the burn is not good advice but i repect that your experience shows it's ok for you. not arguing with you - far from it, i'm genuinely glad to read that someone can mutitask during a burn. my buddy andmerr does the same now he has a real up to date pc. just remember the newbies who read threads such as this need the most faultless sensible advice they can get. It's the same as media - we all know that some ppl get on great with CMC or Princo or whichever media for instance, but those ppl can't recommend such media for the majority of users. Hope you see my point of view and that i'm not arguing or belittling your opinion/experience.

No not at all ;-) Don't worry: we just have different opinions.
But even newbies should understand that things should work fine when doing other things. I mean: thats what PC's are for: to do more than 1 thing at a time ;-) Otherwise we might as well go back to DOS and not multitask at all.
If it does not work fine then there is a reason for it. It may be a combination of things and that makes it usually hard to work out.
My experience, however, after being in the IT business for +15 years is that, although hardware failures occur, it is far less common than software problems.
Drives that read well and do not show any other obvious problems usually are a sign of some software/firmware/media issue.
A good way to find out and deal with it is to boot from a Knoppix/Kanotix CD and analyse what Linux says about it.
I have demonstrated very often to people that had problems, that their hardware was just fine.
Usually it resulted in reinstalling their XP and not installing a million tools or even conflicting software, update their firmware and just get rid of those shitty blank DVD's.
Burning DVD's is not exact science because the combination of factors (hardware/software/firmware/media brands) is pretty damn complex. So simplyfying it is the best way to go.
So having said that you should always check if there is a known issue with your brand burner and the media you want to burn it on. Check if the DVD you try to copy has any protection scheme.
And, the most important: if you can't rip a DVD or burn it, just test if you can still burn DATA i.e. regular files.
I will guarrantee you 100% that if you can burn data - but not DVD-movie - you just have just run into a DVD that is just not compatible (has some kind of protection) with your software!

i hear ya :)
and simplifying is definitely the best way to go, along with attacking all the basics ie firmware/media etc etc. i myself am from the mainframe world, plus Unix & Linux. as for PC's, they've been my hobby since about '86 and i can safely say that DVD burning can be one of the most annoying hobbies/things out there with regards to PC's. But it can be very satisfying when it works well of course.

The Plextor PX-716A was working fine for the last 6 months or so. Yes the drive plays the movie using WinDVD player. I also get this error if trying to decrypt other movies. DVD Decrypter works fine in my other pc's using a Sony DRU 510A and Samsung H552U. I will place the Plextor Drive in my other pc's to eliminate the software issue.

OK I put the Plextor PX-716A in another pc and had the same results. I had already updated the firmware to version 1.09. I decided to re-install firmware version 1.08 because I felt I had nothing to lose at this point. It worked. Has anyone had this problem before with Plextor or any other drive?

I think you might have stumbled on major bug here. I would inform Plextor of this problem if I where you.
It also is probably interesting to see if other people fix their problems by downgrading too...

I flashed my Plextor to 1.09 and had some problems burning and booktyping so I flashed it back to 1.08 and am not having anymore difficulties. I just figured I would wait until the next firmware ver. before I flash again. Nice to know it was not just me.

For what it's worth I never upgrade firmwares unless there's a problem that a new release might fix. Kind of a 'don't rock the boat' philosophy :)

I go in phases (or should I say fads) re updating. I used to update everything constantly, then got sick of updating for the sake of it. nowadays I have been back to updating everything as soon as its released. Now one of my new burners has begun playing up so is being swapped out tomorrow. Its not buggy firmware but write errors but I suspect I'll just install new burner and leave the hell alone. Argh!! technology (says creaky at a technology briefing)

Well right now as I type this on Word, listening to MP3s and running Limewire, I am burning the DVD file using Toast 6 (of course the file was ripped by Mac the Ripper & that was it) that has been taking up 7GB on my G5, which is what I set out to do when I posted on this thread. All I needed to do was listen to what my boyfriend said in the first place, and gave in to pay for more RAM. I LOVE Macs because of all the multitasking abilities such as running many applications while burning a DL DVD, and it sucks for those PC users who can?t? So thx for the help to those who helped me, I'm a dumb girl when it comes to computers sometimes! :-P JRG9662, I wish u the best of luck in finding the answer to ur problem! And AABBCCDD, grow up...
