I have a P4 2.4ghz with 2gig of ram and just bought a SATA 3.0gb/s (which I was told would shrink faster) My other SATA was staying at a speed of 10000kb/s which is a decent speed but why is my 3.0 only staying at 6-7 kb/s?? The buffer is at 535 right now if that helps at all.

i would say your dma is not enabled and its in pio mode there are some other threads dealing with how to enable dma mode i have had this problem and couldn't get my settings back until i installed dvdfabdecrypter which automatically enabled dma. Sound wierd huh, but i couldn't enable any other way.

Just checked them and both are in DMA mode BUT one is in DMA Mode 5 and the other is in DMA Mode 2. What is the difference in modes? What mode should they be in??

@MultiCopr:

Have you uninstalled and reinstalled DVD Shrink?

Do you have any other proggies running in the background while DVD Shrink is encoding? Close all proggies and see if that speeds things up.

Check your CPU usage and see if there's an open proggie that's running without your knowledge.

Lastly, you might have adware/spyware (a virus!) that's bogging down your PC, run whatever utility/proggie you have to check for these.

I will try to uninstall shrink and see if that helps. Not sure what would have changed though.

Nope that didnt change anything.

Hmmm have you installed anything else lately might be conflicting with the program or have you run a spyware and antivirus yet it can't hurt.

I am noticing that under Windows Task Manager shrink will go from using 20K+ of memory to 600K+ of memory and then back down BUT the rate doesnt hardly change at all. Why is it staying at the same rate but still using that much memory??

well based on your specs you have exaclty the same setup I have p4 2.4ghz and 2gigs of ram so this leads me to beleive either you have a memory leak, spyware/virus, or a failing piece of hardware try this got to pcpitstop.com and run there test follow any directions or advice it gives you takes like 3 to 5 minutes its very helpful and will do some diagnostics as well as check for spyware viruses or cpu and cacheing issues.

Ok I ran that and I got two minor problems.

Well only problems I see is that my C drive needs defraging. So that doesnt tell me why my E drive OR my D drive is shrinking so slow now.

well I hope u defragged did disc cleanup and then go to c drive right click then go to properties and on the tabs click tools and run check disc for errors all these steps my help then again may not since you werent having probs before its all just diagnostics to find the right fix if by chance you get any error logs or messages write them down and post them. I think i mentioned earlier that i had to use dvdfab inorder to force my dma to become enabled because my system swore the already were and were not so just another idea let us know how it goes and maybe someont else will read this post and help out.

Well what is bothering me now is that my shrink speed is only 5k instead of the 10k I was getting. When I look under windows task manager shrink is using 600,000 memory usage and the buffer is at 590+ and is still only getting a 5800kb/s rate. I dont understand if its using that much memory then why is it going that slow.

Could it possibly be because I just added that sata 3.0 drive? Someone could it be interferring with something??

@MultiCopr:

Alright, we understand your encoding process is slow. Can you put it in terms of minutes? How long does it take for shrink to encode a 90 minute movie, with only a bare amount of "extras"? If your answer is 2 hours or more, then yes, it's slow and there's something wrong with either your PC/proggies/OS, but if you say 15 - 20 min's, then that's normal.

Hmmmm it takes about 20-25 minutes for a seasonal dvd. I havent tested a regular movie as of late. I just didnt like the fact that my rate dropped from a constant 10000 to 6800 and that my ripping speed dropped from 11-14kb to 5-6kb. There is something not right there and thats what I am trying to figure out.

Well I just tested shrinking the same movie onto my C drive (normal ata) and it had the same speed as both my sata's....How is that possible. I thought the sata drives would be able to shrink the movie alot faster than my C drive. I would have REALY thought the 3.0 sata would be the fastest but all 3 get the same shrink speed. How is that??

Let's say a seasonal dvd is 2 1/2 or even 3 hrs long. 20-25 minutes to encode isn't really a bad trade off is it?

This is the same amount of time to encode for me, and I have an AMD Sempron 3200 1.9 ghz with 512 mb of RAM.

I'm not a computer whiz by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm sure there are other aD members here that have a trick or two on how to deal with your problem.

Good Luck! and Happy Burning!
