Besides watching the burned copy all the way through, what techniques do some of you use to verify you got a good copy.

Sometimes I'll run my copy part of the way back through DVDshrink by using "Open Disk" and when it's done I just close the program. I've found if it reads it all the way through it's a good copy. However, I recently copied The Longest Yard and I got a cycle redundancy message. At that time I figured I got a bad copy but just in case I ran it through the DVD player and fast framed it all the way through the movie and it worked okay. Now I'm wondering if my verifying technique with DVDshrink isn't the way to go.

Any tips? Thanks.

May I ask what program you are using to burn?

Just because it plays all the way through doesn't mean there isn't an error somewhere. For example, I have some DVDs I bought before I started doing backups that have scratches. They play all the way through on any standalone I've tried them on, but there is definitely data that can't be read properly during a rip. Usually you can tell where the errors are when you play them, but not always.

DVD Shrink does not burn. Nero is called up and run through DVD Shrink's interface, so Nero is the one who is actually burning. There isn't a "Verify" option using that method. Although if you switch your backup target to "Hard Disk Folder" and burn the files manually with Nero, there is a "Verify" option that you can put a check mark in that will verify the burnt disc to the source files.

Here is a guide I made on how to burn manually with Nero: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=221453#p...

Shrink does not burn, you need to burn with either Decrypter or Nero. Both of these programs have verify after write setting which you can check and it will do the verification.

debo108,
If you do not want to use Nero to verify the burn you can D/L DVDinfoPro (free) and have it do a CRC test on the burned movie

Hi softman,
I have a Nero Toolkit here:
http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/Nero%20Toolkit.zip

If you download this you will find Nero CDspeed.exe inside, along with a few other .exe files.

You can run CDspeed to check out your drives and discs. It is similar to DVD Infopro. Read the help manual.

Unless you have Nero, you can delete the hwinfo.exe, RegistryChecker.exe files, you won't need them.
Try the other tools, they should work with or without Nero installed. Let me know if you have any problems.

w/the VSO Inspector, is it a must to do both types of scan? How do people actually do it? Whats your standards?

Was just wondering if you chose to do file tests / surface scans...to save time, which do you do over the other?

I use Nero's "Verify" routines on all of my burns and it has never failed to identify a bad burn - However, there are a couple of things to keep in mind.

(1. Some disk errors that show up when checking against the copy CRC will NOT have any effect on the playback of the disk in a stand alone DVD Player. So, always identify the error before rejecting the disk.

(2. Garbage In = Garbage Out on all DVD Burns: You may get a perfect "Verify" on the burn itself BUT if the file you gave the program to burn is no good, or flawed, then a perfect copy of that No Good Data won't mean a darn thing.

I try to always review the file that I am going to burn to disk BEFORE I do the actual burn. At least that way I know that one part of the process is good ahead of time. Then, if I get a bad burn, it helps me track down the cause a lot faster.

The Burn is the last step in the process, and (in my opinion) the simplest step of all. It's what goes into the creation of the final VIDEO_TS folder that will really make or break your final product.
