The elite ending was just a teaser by the Bungie team, it was not integral to the storyline. Sgt. Johnson was really in outer space at the time.

The Master Chief and Cortana, onboard a Longsword in the debris field of the destroyed Halo, find one remaining Pelican containing Sgt. Johnson, Lieutenant Haverson, Warrant Officer Polaski, Corporal Locklear, and a set of cryotubes containing Spartan 058, Linda.
They had a few Pelicans before the flood completely took over the Pillar Of Autumn, remember on the Maw level Foe Hammer was about to pick Cheif up, ther were a at least two Pelicans, Foe Hammers and the one Johnson got, you didn't think that THE Johnson would have stayed and died do you? I mean he kicked a lot of alien 455
Oh and in case you were wondering,
Cortana sais, "Scanning. (Pause) Just . . . dust and echoes. We are all that's left."
seeing as Halo just exploded the amount of radiation and static Cortana must have picked up couldn't have found Johnson, and Cheif may have been a few hours away from them and Cortana may have scanned again found Johnson. GAME OVER

that would be pretty cool if an insider from a company like sony with the ps3 or bungie with
halo 3 just joined forums saying things unknown to the public but with no credentials. then
when everyone sees he's dead on they will be dumbstruck.
But they all do sort of the same thing, and that is rearrange what you thought was real, and they remind you of the beauty of very simple things. You forget, because youre so busy going from a to z, that theres 24 letters in between... You turn on... tune in... and you drop out...

Haha I come back and look what this has turned into, 69, long and hard. lol
anyway
To whoever asked, most of this information is in the Halo novels. They are really good to read, especially Fall of Reach. Has anyone got the graphic novel yet?

you have to be obsessed or strange to read a book about one of your favorite games.
But they all do sort of the same thing, and that is rearrange what you thought was real, and they remind you of the beauty of very simple things. You forget, because youre so busy going from a to z, that theres 24 letters in between... You turn on... tune in... and you drop out...

No, you dont have to be obsessed or strange. Try telling that to the millions of people who acctually have read the Halo novels. They are interesting if you want to learn more about Halo or even if you just like to read.
And has anyone read the graphic novel preview. One of the stories is about a man who knows why the Covenant only landed in New Mombassa. Could tell us more about the Ark.

Well we know why they just went to New Mombassa, because they have sensors to find Forerunner Technology, and they didn't realise Earth was occupied by Humans
