DVD+R DL - Is Brand Important?

I just got an iMac and Toast 7 and I'm very interested in being able to make uncompressed backup copies of movies on DVD. I understand capacity well enough to know that most movies won't fit uncompressed on a standard DVD+R or DVD-R.
I bought a 3-pack of Memorex DVD+R DL (dual layer) and tried burning one disk. The result was failure during verification and then a disk that appears OK at first when played in a stand-alone machine, but which quickly starts acting like the disks my kids have used as frisbees (i.e., freezing, distortion, etc.)
I have read about the brand of the media making a big difference, so is that most likely my problem here? Best Buy has a 15-pack spindle of Memorex DVD+R DL on sale for $30 this week, but do you indeed get what you pay for? Does anyone know how to identify the blank disk manufacturer on a Mac? I am probably going to post this same inquiry as a separate post elsewhere, which I hope is not a serious violation of forum etiquette.

I am not familiar with Macs and their workings, however I do know I would steer clear of Memorex. I have not had good luck with this brand. I have used Verbatim and Ritek for my backups, and am tempted to try the new Fuji ones. You do indeed get what you pay for. I have done all my dual layer backups using DVD Decrypter in iso read and the write mode. Decrypter handles the layer break well, since I do not know how the Toast program operates, you would be better to try the iso mode if possible. Also, some older standalones cannot handle the dl media try playing your disk on some other players and see how it works. Just my two cents.

Where media is concerned, brand and who manufactures the brand is everything
Good quality DVD+R DL manufacturers:
MKM 001- Verbatim
RICOHJPN D00- Ricoh, Fuji, TDK
Acceptable DVD+R manufacturer:
Ritek D01- Ridata, ritek
Unacceptable DVD+R DL manufacturers:
Philips CD2- Memorex
CMC Mag D01- Datawrite (and, I'm sure several others)
Good quality DVD-R DL manufacturer:
MKM 01RD30- Verbatim
Unacceptable DVD-R DL manufacturer:
CMC Mag AD4- Memorex
To oversimplify the DL choices ? VERBATIM GOOD ? MEMOREX BAD ?
