I have been backing up dvd's flawlessly for months with an AnyDVD/DVD Shrink/Nero combination. Suddenly I am making coasters. It get through the Shrink part but then quits within seconds of starting the burn. Can someone tell by looking at my log file what the problem might be. At the end it says "Illegal Disk". Thanks, Mike

i'm susbcribed :)

gotta finish work now, but already i see downrev firmware, i 'think' that your burner's latest firmware is BS0S, also the DMA needs the nvidia drivers reloading. sorry it's nit my usual tidy reply, will catch up with y'all later...

Nero can get corrupted from a variety of sources and I think this is what has happened here. The fix for this is to remove Nero completely, using the Nero Clean Tool and then install an up to date version. (Yours is out of date, current is 6.6.0.16)

Be sure to follow the CleanTool instructions, mainly write down your Nero serial number. You will need it to complete the new installation.

Nero Tools:

http://nero.com/us/Clean_Tools.html

Afterdawn has Nero downloads which is a lot faster than trying to get it from Nero :

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd-r_tools/nero.cfm

Your device map looks a bit strange to me. It looks like you have your ROM and a hard drive on the Primary IDE buss and your burner, along with another hard drive on the Secondary.

Normally you would have both DVD drives on the Secondary IDE and the hard drives on the primary, with your boot (C:\) drive as Master.

A quick way to update your Firmware is to use DVD Decrypter.

Open Decrypter -> Mode -> File. Change the "Source" to your burner. Right click your drive in the Source menu.(It should be showing LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1633S (#:). This opens the Drive menu. Now you click on the bottom menu item, "Check for Firmware Updates" this takes you to the correct page at http://www.rpc1.org.

You should enable your DMA, lots of guides are available, here's mine:
http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/dvdguide005.html

This can make things more difficult:
Adapter driver: <nvatabus> HA 0

Hopfully creaky has some info or input on Nvidia drivers. I don't know to much about them but it seems they may have "issues". I may be wrong though.

Hi gurnard,
Yep those burn logs are something else. I just look down from the top and try to get a few clues.

Kinda in this order:

Windows Version
Nero Version
Installed location
Burner and firmware
Device Map- Order and DMA
Available Memory
Disc information
Burn Start time
The first error and when it occured relative to the start time.
Error Sense Key (I have a chart that helps)
Drivers listed at the bottom.

I'll look the log over several times, looking for anything else that looks odd. If I don't know what something is, I do a Google for it and try to find out.

Most of the time it is bad media, especially if the failure occurs a few minutes into the burn.
In this case the failure occured almost the instant the burn process begain, with a "Not Ready" message. This seems to me to be a problem with the Nero program itself.

Knowing Nero, it made a coaster out of the disc it started burning for two seconds before failing. One of the first things Nero would try to do is have the burner perform the power calibration checks. It did not get that far, I don't think.

Also I've seen something about Nvidia drivers in some other post so I focused on those a bit. It may be just difficult to get DMA turned on.

At any rate, every Nero problem I've ever had was fixed by removing and reinstalling the program.

Well thats how I try and figure out the logs.

Hi Guys, Good news, I used Nero Clean Tool and then updated the Nero to 6.6.06, I updated the two Liteon dvd drive firmwares and fixed the DMA settings. The DMA thing was a little uncertain. The method to get there was a little different from the ?Guide? I followed, it might have been the Nvidia thing that caused it to look different. There was only one thing listed under IDEATA/ATAPI Controllers in Device manager window, an Nvidia listing. When I went there it then had two different tabs for Primary and Secondary. They were both set to ?Let BIOS Decide? but I unchecked that box which enabled a drop down list full of about 8 different DMA options. Without any certainty as to which type of DMA setting I was capable of (Ultra, 3, 4 I ???) I started with the top one on the list for both primary and secondary and everything works great again. I just downloaded the Nvidia motherboard drivers now and it looks like they haven?t been changed in over a year so maybe I should let well enough alone on that, what do you think. Thanks loads for all the help, it is really great that you take the time to help us neophytes?Saved again by After Dawn?..Mike
