Hi all,
I have always been one to sing the praises of DVDShrink even when others ahve said that other programs are better.

I have been trying to backup my Stargate SG1 season oneset to no avail, everytime I attempt a backup it shuys down XP and restarts saying "XP havd a serious problem and shut down". I did a complete system reinstall (format HD partition) just tried it again, you guessed it, it fell over, tried to back up Sliders season one, fell over, tried to back up old faithful Planet of the Apes (remake), fell over. I have tried ripping with DVDecrypter and the Shrink falls over, this problem has only started since I tried to backup Startgate SGI Season 1.

Does anyone have any ideas, is it MGM's copy protection??

The disc structure is a little weird as it seems to have 2 copies of each episode on the disc, weird I know.
I have also tried to reauthor to no avail.

Any help would be appreciated.

When you reinstalled Shrink did you re-download the file? If not, try to redownload it.

I would also download Nero and try to backup using Recode 2, which is pretty much Shrink. See if the problem really is Shrink or something else.

Your computer crashes, hangs or restarts when you run DVD Shrink

Problem:

When you run DVD Shrink it either makes your computer to hang, crash or restart.

Introduction:

It?s always hard to find out what can cause your problem. All systems are different so it?s impossible to write down exactly what causes your problem. I can only give you a checklist to walk thru with some possible solutions to the problem.

Possible causes:

1. Some of the files required by DVD Shrink are either missing or out-of-date in your system. When was the last time you visited the Microsoft Windows Update site?

2. There is a conflict between DVD Shrink and another software installed on your pc. Right before the problem occurred what software did you install? Any other burning/video program installed?

Your system is overheating.

Buggy drivers have been identified as a possible cause for this problem. This could have happened if you recently updated your system thru, either manually or automatically. Outdated drivers are one the other hand also a cause for problems.

You have come across one of the "Problematic Movies".

Your computer restarts?

That it does a reboot sounds as there is some driver conflict or missing driver that is causing it to gets unstable. Shrink uses 100% of you CPU and that can be the trigger.

Change your settings in your Windows so you at least end up with an error code from Windows you can go further with.

My Computer >> Properties >> Advanced Tab >> Start up and Recovery

Under the System Failure section - make sure that the Automatically Restart is unchecked.

Then do a restart of your PC and then run DVD Shrink and do a search on Google (or a similar service) to (maybe) find a clue to what driver that causes the conflict.

Also check out the Windows logbook in the Microsoft Management Console - there could be more information.

Use a test program:

http://www.memtest86.com/]Memtest86 http://users.bigpond.net.au/cpuburn/]CPU Burn-in

If you pass both tests then it?s not hardware related.

Latest Microsoft DirectX installed?

DVD Shrink uses the http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx APIs. You need to have the latest

If you don't know which version you currently have installed - do this:

Click Start in Windows desktop
Click Run
Type dxdiag
You will now see which version you have installed
If you have an older version than 9.0c installed - download the latest http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx Microsoft DirectX version. Make sure you select the right language version.

Change videorenderer:

Try another videorender in DVD Shrink preferences.

Not a solution, but try disable the video preview in preferences. It may be a problem for just that DVD.

Drivers for your graphical card updated?

Are your video drivers up-to-date, or have they been recently updated? It looks like out-of-date video drivers, or buggy ones recently installed could be the cause of some problems. Try and update your drivers, or downgrade them, depending on your circumstances.

Motherboard drivers updated?

Check what brand of motherboard you have. Go to that manufactures homepage. Select your motherboard. Download and install the latest updates.

Overclocked computer?

If it's overclocked try to get it back to normal speed.

Bad Memory, Insufficient Memory, Conflicting Memory?

Take out the memory, put the memory back in. Try the memory in a different slot. Try different memory.

Insufficient Power?

Unfortunately there is no cheap way to try this, however you can borrow one from a friends pc, or a spare pc, minimum wattage required by most pc's is 250. Use a minimum of 300 watts if you try this step.

Video Card is incompatible with the motherboard, or invalid settings and drivers:

Try a different Video card, use both a PCI and AGP (if possible) to see if your AGP slot may be bad.

Network driver, IRQ, or card is bad/conflicting:

Reinstall the network card in a new PCI slot, Update the drivers, and disable sound. After the card has been reinstalled and is functioning reenable the sound card.

Bad PCI Slot:

Switch the slot that the Sound card, network card and/or video card reside in.

Sound Card conflicts with video card/driver:

Try an older video card, or disabling the sound (by removal or disabling in BIOS).

BIOS:

Do not attempt if you do not know what this means.

Download and flash with the newest version you can find on your motherboards support page.

Some settings you could watch out for:

Try to ?Restore defaults? in your BIOS.

If you see anything there that says "Turbo" or "Fast", set it to "Normal" or "Auto".

It turned to be my selection of "Turbo" in the System Performance setting of my mobo (Soltek SL-75FRN2). Knocking it back to "Optimal" produces a noticeable hit in performance but no lock-ups during memtest86 and now no lock-ups when running Shrink.

Another way could be to rise the vcore setting in BIOS - but watch out for any temperature risings (don't burn your processor).

Also check that your CPU/RAM speed are not set to high.

Overheating

Another known reason for problem is cooling ? especially if you have a laptop. You could have a look at getting some kind of. Make sure your PC is well ventilated.

If you have some type of program that tells you the current CPU heat you could see if it's to high. If you don't have any - use a freeware program such as SpeedFan.

For a test, try pausing the encoding process every 5 minutes or so and let the CPU cool down for about 5 minutes, and then resume to see if it helps.

Another way is to run DVD Shrink with the case open and a big house hold fan blowing straight onto the board - if it works then it's very likely to be a chip overheating problem - then you just need to find out which part it is.

Free hard disk space:

If DVD Shrink stops after having created a partial backup, make sure you have enough space on your hard-drive and that it's not heavily fragmented. It should be at least 10 GB

You might also want to try rebooting your pc before using DVD Shrink, just in case you have a huge swap file that needs clearing.

Intel Application Accelerator:

If you have it installed - try to update it or uninstall it.

Colour depth:

Normally your desktop should be set to 32-bits for DVD Shrink to manipulate video correctly.

Seems DVD Shrink 3.1 will crash as long as colour depth is set to 32-bits. When I switched to 16-bit, it stopped crashing. Even at 800x600 resolution (I normally run at 1600x1200). But when switched to 16-bits, it doesn?t crash at any resolution, even 1600x1200.

Virus problems?

Try to run a virus check. If you don't have any antivirus program installed on your system - you can use http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ - freeware for personal use.

Guys,
Thank you very much for your responses, I was thinking maybe Nero???

When it crashes it restarts XP and comes up with "Serious system problem, do you want to sent to Microsoft", I check don't send. I copied the error message but the computer was so unstable that it kept restarting for no apparant reason I was unable to post it here.

I know this may sound stupid, but it all seem to start when I was backing up MGM's Stargate, I have backed up every movie I own in excess of 100, never a problem!!

I just completed another reinstall but only installed SP1 not SP2 I always keep my PC up to date, yesterday I only installed SP1 & SP2 (on cd)I didn't do any internet updates. I thought of many of the scenarios you guys have put forward, I am still thinking Stargate is the cause.

Has anyone had problem backing up TV series?

I will see how this build goes.

Thanks again will keep you posted.

M

PS. Just finished downloading 1Click DVD will see how that works, any feed back??

Here is a small update, I downloaded 1click DVD and DVD43, I installed both on another PC I have and tried to back-up Stargate SG1 Season 1 Disc 3 and received a message from 1click DVD saying that "this DVD cannot be copied", I had the TV series box checked , so I'm now thinking it is the Disc's.

As an aside, the reviews of 1Click DVD says that it decrypts CSS and something else, that is not true it can't decrypt squat, DVD43 or AnyDVD is the helper on this.

Molder ,
Just a side note. When the OS shuts the computer down it is usually because of heat buildup. Try opening the side and then do the Disk. This sounds like you need to Vac the computer or use compressed air to blow it out.
You might try a free registry cleaner and clean the conflicts there if there are any.

You might try this:
D/L DVDFAB Decrypter and rip the disk to HD and then use Shrink or use AnyDVD along w/ Shrink. I'll bet Disk 3 is a bad press though. Neighbor did that disk no problem w/ AnyDVD and Shrink

I would like to thank you guys for the help here, I'm pretty sure I have tracked the problem down. A bad stick of 512meg Kingmax memory.

I must say a big thankyou to jmet3 for hiS post he started me in this direction, I downloaded the memtest and found errors, I ook one stick out and found errors, I took the bad stick out and put the other stick in and it tested ok, I then did a reinstall (the bad memory seemed to stuff everything up, I was getting these weird blue screens of death in XP), I was then able to back up Stargate SG1 season 1 vol 3.

So to cap off a wasted weekend, just to let you and other know, I had ripped the dvd to HDD and was trying to back up from the HDD, I had not copied it before, I did try recode2 and that caused XP to fall over as well, I didn't get to try all of jmet3 suggestions but I will give the CPU heatup test a burl.

Again thank you all.

jmet3 you rock!!

Final update, I took the stuffed ram stick to my computer store and he replaced it for me, I chucked it in and problem solved. All in all a bad stick of memory.

Thanks again to all who assisted.
