Okay, I used to have a flip-top for my older PS2 which worked perfectly, but I gota slimline PS2 a couple of months ago and recently purchased a flip-top for that. For some reason it doesn't work at all. I turn the PS2 on and it acts as if there is no disc. I tried with DVD's, CD's, games etc. and it just stays on the main screen as if there is nothing inside. I put the flip-top on exactly as the instructions said and it doesn't work. I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone could help me figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks in advance.

I just installed mine too, and got a "no data" whenever I put in a disc. It would not boot originals or copies. I figured it out though, in my case, the tiny spring near the top of the case was not installed correctly. Once I got it fixed I have had no problems.

Actually, I remember the spring coming out and I had to put it in again, maybe I did that wrong. I will check that out. Any chance you could take a pic just so I can see if I have it in the right place? I would appreciate that.

Thank you for replying and for your help.

I tried to snap a pic but now that the top is on, details are hard to pickup. The thing that helped the most was looking straight down on the fliptop and seeing a little hole that the short end of the spring fits into. I'll see if I can work around the lighting if that does not work for you.

Good luck.

This is simillar to http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/234908 Here are the correct installation instructions for the flip top on the slimline: http://www.chipzone.com/installation/playstation2/fliptop-v12/pag... Are you using Swap Magic, a game shark, or ARMAX? It doesn't work with originals either? You may want to try reinstalling it following the link I posted. Later.

The problem has got worse... I put in the spring correctly and thought that would do the trick, so I put everything together and tried it, and it still won't read the discs. I tried holding it down like in that thread that the previous poster gave the link to, and nothing. The laser isn't even trying to read the discs even know I am certain that the flip-top is on correctly.

Thank you for your help guys but if anyone can give me the slightest clue as to what to do then that would be great. If not... :(

check if all the sensors are activated(pressed down)and that nothing is preventing them from becoming activated. If nothing works try removing and reinstalling the original fliptop(the one that comes with the PS2)to see if that fixes the problem. If it does work with the original fliptop it is most likely that the fliptop you bought is damaged.

This isn't an easily solved problem. There are a lot of variables: human error in installaing the flip top, a potentially defective flip top, known defects with the v.12 laser, known defects in flip top compatibility with the slimline PS2. It could be any of these issues. If I had to guess, I'd rule out human error drgnsthx, as it sounds like you know what you're doing. Complain to the site you ordered from and say it was defective. Maybe you could get a refund or exchange, or reinstall the original flip top as suggested. Unfortunately every time I've come across a problem like this in the forums it seems to have been unresolved. Good Luck.

I installed the original top and it works, so it isn't anything to do with the laser. The website I got it from are very reliable, so I doubt it is a defective flip-top. I don't think it's human error as I've done everything as it said on the instructions. I will call up the company and ask for a replacement flip-top and see if that works. If all else fails then I might just invest in another method to play my American and Japanese games.

Thank you for your help. :)

If the fliptop doesn't work, just give up on it and do a tape and tissue mod. Open up your case again and tape the back sensor (toward the upper left and beneath the hinge part of the lid) with duct tape or even regular Scotch tape (I use several layers to be on the safe side), put the case back together, and stuff a small ball of tissue into the hole for the front sensor (lower right just above the power button).

I gave up on installing my fliptop because I ended up stripping one of the lid screws. The tape mod has served me well for over six months so far.

^ Does that work with or without the original top on? I misplaced it so I just want to know even though I'll most likely find it soon.

Thanks.

If things couldn't get any worse...

I put the original top back on, and for some reason it now doesn't read the discs. They just don't spin so it's not the old "Disc Read Error" problem, but I have no idea what the actual reason is. I heard this could be a problem with either the laser, or possibly something attached to the laser that makes it move to the position of the disc to read it. It looks like all of your help is pretty pointless now as the flip-top must not be the problem.

This is a very annoying situation, as I keep thinging I've figured it out (thanks to your help) and then I find a new problem. Well, if anyone else has any clue what I should do, please tell me.

Thanks everyone for trying to help me.
