My first day but second request for information. I have a collection of about 800 dvd's. They are all original. I only buy originals. Some have been damaged through misuse by the family. I would like to make backup copies of a number of the ones I really like so that all is not lost if my original gets damaged but when I try to copy a message comes up saying cannot be copied. I guess some security.
The software I use is Roxio Easy Media Creator which works okay for DVD-R original to DVD-R blank disk but won't copy my normal dvd's.
Is there a software which will copy dvd's no matter how they coded/secured.

It seems that you hava DVD`s with copy protections and you need to use program like DVD Decrypter to remove them.

hi, welcome to the forum. i just requested your other thread be moved to whichever relevant forum it needs to go in. (i'll request this one be moved too, no biggie). anyway, for this there are 2 products i recommend, DVD Decrypter (free but no longer updated) - this deals with the encryption (though may struggle with some of the newer encryptions out there, oh and it doesn't Shrink. However it has a burn engine built-in so at the very least you could use it purely as a burn program).

My 2nd recommendation is DVD Shrink - this Shrinks the movie to fit a single layer (DVD-5) disc, for example. It's more outdated than Decrypter in respect of encryptions, however it's still a fantastic Shrinker.

(there are a few other programs, but those are two i recommend).

Also, for newer encryptions there's a paid product - AnyDVD, and there's something called DVDFab Decrypter which i believe is similar to DVD Decrypter but i've had no need to try that one yet.

i would suggest looking in the guides section at top of page, also you can download the actual programs in the software section up to also. good luck and happy reading

CloneDVD 2 with AnyDVD (which i use) its a free trial for 21 days heres the link

http://www.slysoft.com/en/ and a guide to use the programs mentioned here

http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/index.html

there are several other programs but theses are the easier ones to use

Before I download too many things let me tell you where I am now. Not much luck!!
I have no problem copying DVD-R original to DVD-R balnk disc. My problem is with normal dvd's.
I have downloaded AnyDVD, DVD Decryper and DVD Shrink.
When I use Roxio Easy Media Creator to try to copy there is a message saying source disc and target disc incompatable, please insert a valid disc.
When I try to copy using Iomega DVD Copy I get the following message:"You are attempting to copy an UDF formatted disc. This disc is not compatable with the copy operation. Would you like to copy this disc anyway. Please note that your disc may be corrupt or unreadable if you continue. Abort ot Write Anyway?"
In both cases I am unable to copy.

First you read it (it will clone it to your HD)
and then you burn it (write mode)

hi aabbccdd. I downloaded DVD Decryper and AnyDVD. I also downloaded Clone DVD 2. However I don't know how to use Clone DVD. It asks for a file or title name of what I want to copy but I have no idea how to get that. I basically just want a copying software which has a screen shot that simply shows me source drive and target drive and all I have to do is click burn.I don't want anything more complicated than that. I notice there is something called DVDFab which seems to have such a screen shot so I'll try to download that for a trial. Have you had any experience with DVD Fab.

dude ur definitley lost in the forest. lets see if we can put down some bread crumbs for u. lets start out with fab dvd decrypter and shrink. they are both free and u can find them at filepedia right here at ad. put ur dvd in ur dvd burner( the dvd u wish to copy). give it a minute or 2. then open dvd fab decrypter. select browse for source. then select ur dvd burner ( which will be under my computer). then it will give u a folder where it will put the file. if u dont think u can remember write it down. when it gets through coping the disc open up shrink (go ahead and put ur blank dvd in the burner). u should be able to find the folder under my computer, c drive most of the time( look for the folder u wrote down). after u fnd the folder click backup in shrink . this should get u started. i would start out with movies that r NOT made by sony until u get familiar with it a little. for more advice with illustrations look under my sig or some of the other members.

thanks gamename. I'm still a bit confused. currently I would put the original disc in my pc drive and the blank one in my burner and copy directly with the click of a button. are you now saying that I don't use my pc drive but put the original in my burner, copy the movie to my harddrive and then replace the original with a blank disc and copy from from harddrive to the blank disc? isn't that more complicated?

Normal original dvds are dvd-roms.They are pressed discs, not burned. If they are on dvd-r then they are not originals-these are backups.

Please explain what you mean by dvd-r originals.

Original dvds have encryption on them, that is why nero and roxio can't rip through them. They need help. There's a program by slysoft called anydvd that runs in the background. It will pull off the encryptions, allowing whatever software you have to burn them,as long as they are a 1:1 copy ratio. If they are too large for your blank disc, they will have to be compressed, via dvd shrink.

Now on backup dvds, the encryption is gone, but also the size is already set to either dvd-5-single layer-or dvd-9-dual layer.Usually a simple copy disc feature of roxio, nero, sonic,or anyother program will work.

Damaged originals are going to be tougher. Dvd decrypter is the more powerful ripper for this job.

On original dvd-9 dvds with dvd decryper, use file mode, then you'll have to compress them with dvd shrink.

On original, smaller dvd-5 and copying backup discs, use the Mode Iso read and Mode Iso write. This mode is for when you already have the dvd-5 size files to burn,no compressing is necessary. The iso read and write is a 1:1 copy,so you can also use this mode for original dvd-9 movies onto dual layer media.

If you have a reader and a writer there's absolutely nothing wrong with using both drives as long as you make sure to have the software write a temporary image to your hard drive (hope I didn't cause any more confusion).

hi saugman. we buy some religous dvd's from catholic company and the format is DVD-R so I find them easy to copy. I put the original, which I purchased, in my pc drive and a blank disc in my burner and use Roxio Easy Media Creator and just click burn.
Because I'm not really a technically clued up guy so what I would like to do is exactly the same procedure even if I use different software. I have downloaded AnyDVD and will download DVD Fab (it has a screen I like: source drive, target drive, click burn). If that doesn't work I'll try all the other solutions that you guys have been good enough to give to me. I'm 57 so I want to keep it simple.

if u have a dvd rom and a burner it is fine to use the rom to read and the burner to burn. i was just trying to keep things simple until u get the hang of it.

Thistle48. Ok now we know those are backups that you are successfully copying using the copy disc feature of roxio as well as a dvd-rom drive and DVD-RW drive.

Original movies:

I rarely use DVD Decrypter. Now with AnyDVD running in the background: I use DVD Shrink for most of my backups. It's very simple, once you try it a few times. You've got to have that program anyways if you are compressing the data from DVD-9 to blank DVD-5.I do use Nero 6,oem version to auto burn after DVD Shrink get through encoding.Dvd decrypter's burn engine also works with DVD Shrink.

Click on aabbccdd's post with the bbmayo guide.

On those smaller DVD-5 original dvds, use DVD Decrypter in: Mode iso read and Mode iso write. No compression,so you can also do backup copies using this same method. Those larger dvd-9's will have to be compressed with DVD Shrink so you'll have to use file mode.
