...to put in a new hard drive? I have this other computer that eventually just died after Smart failure was predicted. Just wondering how much the cost of a new drive would be, and to cut some costs, would it be pretty easy to put it in myself?

Hi Tannie,

The price of a Hard Drive (HD for short) depends upon the size of the HD. I just put in a 300GB HD and it cost me $139.00. You can get a 40 GB HD for about $30.00.

You might wish to try to lQQk for prices on the Internet ~

The window that you're seeing AfterDawn in is called the Internet window either Explorer or Netscape.

Go to the "Address" bar at the top of your Explorer screen. It's a white oblong thingie with the address of AfterDawn in it. Whenever the screen changes, you'll sea that the writing changes. Type in: http://www.google.com/webhp. When the window opens you'll sea another bar there, it's called the "Search" bar. Try typing in "Hard Drive." That should result in approx. 157,000,000 results. With that many, you're sure to find something you like.

As far as difficulty in installation ? First, TURN OFF YOUR PC THEN UNPLUG IT FROM THE WALL ! Then, you'll have to unscrew the case so that it is open and you can sea the insides. You'll sea a couple of flat, square silver boxes with wires plugged into them. They would be your DVD / CD drives and your HD's (you might have as many as 2) inside your PC. The ones without trays are your HD's. Just remove the old one, 4 screws and 2 wires and put your new one in its place. After it's in, and all wires and screws are back, you can plug it back in and turn it on. When it boots up, you need to "find" your HD and right-click it and select "Format", then format it and put your factory install discs in, the ones that came with the PC and you're good to go.

Are you sure it's your HD ?

Did you try to reinstall your factory startup discs ?

Let me know how you make out,

Pete

lol pete, very, very sarcastic post but still informative.

Tannie,

Check http://newegg.com for a new HDD, they have the best prices and are very reliable.
If you are looking for the best deal available check http://slickdeals.net there are links to cheap HDD deals (usually with rebates) every day,

Good luck!

Thanks Pete for the help!

With the hard drive, I've encountered the "Disk Boot Failure Insert System Disk" to which I tried some boot disks I had, which seemed to be working. Then it asked for the Windows XP cd, to which, once again, seemed to be working. It was until the message popped up that said I didn't have a hard drive!!!!!!

Guess that means it's b*tched, huh??!!

Hi Tannie,

It sounds like your HD is unstable so that even if you got it up for a short span of time it would probably die right soon.

HD's are funny. There are different warrantee times.- some 1 yr, some 3 yrs and some 5 yrs. The PC that works, use that, (undo the bad HD so that you can sea the Mfgr and s/n) and maybe you can get a replacement. Can't hurt to try ?

Now THAT was totally uncalled for UNLESS you're a certified psychic -

Many members can barely boot up a PC and to me it seemed very likely our friend hadn't been inside a PC. To avoid embarrassing anyone I wrote an extremely basic guide to help in doing the job asked about. Sometimes, even experienced pple forget to unplug their PC. I spent 9 yrs as a NJ, EMT and have seen enough to know that those things do indeed happen.

Watch your assumptions, PLEASE. you don't do yourself justice.

Wishing I had come across Pete's post BEFORE I bought my external - oh well - at least I got it at a sale price. But I sure could have used a 300 extra gb for a few dollars more!

DVDBack23,

No worries.

Many times we have pple here who can boot a PC up and cannot do much else. I try to write my instructions so that anyone can use them. Typing takes a bit of time SO, if I write something that's on my own level OR your level, it just a wasted piece of work if the guy I?m writing it for can't even do a "Goggle" OR worse still, they don't even know what a Goggle means :)

Something to consider, when we write, we forget the others read our conversations, months, even years from now when a "key-word" brings it out of the archives during a "Forum search". I remember, a couple of years ago, probably about 2 in the morning, I was chatting with a Mod online, he told me that he could sea how many pple there were on forum. At that time, he told me there were 22 members writing in forum BUT there were 184 "guests" reading threads through the forum. I like "little" math comparisons that happen in our daily lives. I thought it interesting that there were more than 8 times more pple reading than posting. When we write, others are reading because their problems mimic those in any given thread. Always remember that. experts and beginners are trying to glean information from your posts. try to write so that it makes sense to everyone.

Just an explanation of why I write so simply,

Much peace,

Pete
