Hi AnderL,
If you are in to burning movies, i would suggest you get a DL burner. Not all DVD RW support DL or dual layer burns, and they are nice to have. DL discs are expensive but they allow you to make a copy with no compression on the video. If i understand bitsetting correctly, that has to do with the drive's ability to book-type to DVD-ROM, and that feature can help other devices read your burned copy easier. It isn't absolutly essential to have, but it does help in the compatibility. Booktyping only works on DVD+R media. I got a memorex DVD16+/-DL4RW/D2 burner mainly because the Nero package was thrown in for free and the whole thing cost less than 90 bucks. If i were to get another burner i think i would go with a Benq, but i don't have any specific model numbers for you. Burner speed is not as important to us, as we tend to burn on the slow side for DVDs. Others can post what they like to use, but i would suggest you get a DL burner as you will like and want/need that feature if you want to do full copy back-ups. I saw this link in catfreak's sig line:
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Home.aspx?ArticleTypeId=2... it looks like a DL recorder review.

Here's a pretty good review of the BenQ DW1640 DVD-Writer,
http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/226
And if you decide to purchase it, newegg.com has it for $42.99 shipped, how do I know, I just bought it.

AndreL--
I am very happy with my new Lite-On 1673S DVD Writer--installed a few weeks ago and love it. It does support book-typing (Bitsetting)for DVD+R media and in fact I set it to burn all DVD+R media no matter which program I use to burn (ie. Nero, Decrypter etc.)and now my burns play on every type of stand-alone I have tried.
But, from what I understand, the absolute best quality burner is Plextor--I have no experience with them, but have heard this many times from reliable sources--fairly expensive though. Hope that helps

Plextor is considered the cadillac but also costs about twice as much as other good drives. I would probably go with the benq DW1640 or lite-on SOHW-1693S both of which are capable of bitsetting. My benq isn't quit as finicky about media as my litey SOHW-1653S but they are both good burners. The litey will rip a little faster due to it's SMART-X technology. Another choice to consider would be the sony DRU-800 which is a rebadged lite-on SOHW-1693S. The pioneer DVR-109 and DVR-110 can be made to bitset/booktype but requres that it be flashed with hacked (buffalo) firmware and will void the warranty.
MaxBurn,
Your memorex dvdrw is a rebadged lite-on SOHW-1673S and is capable of bitsetting/booktyping.

Boy, I wish you had been around to answer my frustrated posts a week ago. You have given me new hope. Evidently, Elby's CloneDVD2 will support bitsetting when the "output type" is set to +R DL but ONLY if a particular burners firmware supports this "by default(?)". I (still guess) that pioneer's 110D latest firmware does not support this since all I get is a +R standard backup and not a ROM standard using CloneDVD.
After previously sampling the backup software market, I really don't want to load up my now-clean, no-conflicts, dedicated backup box with alot of other burning programs. Elby's CloneDVD2 is my backup software of choice. I need easy, sure and quick because I bred "destructo-children" (... but it was an accident daddy! ...) and have to backup and re-backup all my movie purchases.
>>>>> So, can you please provide a link to this "hacked (buffalo) firmware"? <<<<<
How much does it cost? I'm sure I can trust an old timer like you to send me to a "safe", no tricks website for this download. At a crummy $63 for the OEM 110D, I'm not gonna worry about warrenty coverage if it gets me bitsetting to DVD-ROM capabilty.
How does the buffalo hack work? (with the 110D specifically if you know)
Is it Safe?
Is there a user interface to control bitsetting features etc. or does it all work in the background like firmware usually does?
I wouldn't mind at all if you expounded on bitsetting in general or specifically with CloneDVD2 and the Pioneer 110D since I am just now breaking-in to DL burning.
Just so you know, I've been backing up for almost 3 years now but with single layer -R disks. I split the movies to keep max quality. Just recently, Expen$ive DL media can sometimes be found on sale. My JVC home entertainment equiptment, Saturn "Relay" Van's player and many of my friend's standalone rigs don't like +R media so I NEED bitsetting. I have not tried -R DL blanks yet.
Thanks

Whisperer,
What did I get myself into? :)
To be perfectly honest with you I don't have a pioneer drive so have never actually flashed with the buffalo f/w but know it is available and works with DVR-109'S and DVR-110's. I've done a lot of crossflashing with lite-on drives and have never had any problems. I don't have a link for the buffalo f/w but suggest trying a google search, oh and btw it is free. Next time I'll keep my big mouth shut. Only kidding. You know I will help if I can. If you can't find anything, pm kivory666. He has flashed his DVR-109 with the buffalo f/w. Let me know if I can be of any further assistance.
Have you considered buying a bitsetting/booktype ready dvdrw such as benq or lite-on since the prices have come down so much?

Yeah exactly, I posted (most people don't pay attention to my posts, sigh) above about a review (pretty good review, IMHO) on the Benq DW1640.

Mort81, LOL!
"What did I get myself into? :)"
Sorry about the torrent-quality of my post but I spent an un-quality, unrewarding last week try to get CloneDVD to bitset with my 110D (which it is supposed to be able to do according to Pioneers own website) and finally gave up in favor of waiting for better firmware. Hence my jump on your post.
Anyone else? Perhaps an independent bitsetting utility with an interface? Switching hardware would be my last choice since I know and trust Pioneer and have bought up-the-chain since the AO5.
And I would rather go on someone's recommedation of a website to download the hacked firmware rather than just do a google search. Had some bad experiences with trick spyware etc ... it's wild, wild west out there.
Thanks

Whisperer,
I didn't mean to leave you high and dry on the buffalo f/w it's just that I don't feel I'm qualified to answer all your questions regarding it since I don't have a pioneer drive and have not had any experience with this f/w. I would start a new thread asking for some info and a link to it. There are several members here at AD that have used it. Good luck and let me know what you find out.
