Hi there all!
I've checked the search feature and it didn't turn much up, checked the FAQ section too!

I know I have a modded PS2 - I don't know which chip it is, it was done like 2 years ago. I think it's one of the solder in type ones if that makes a difference?!

Anyway, I can play backed up games no worries, so all good there.I just bought a PS1 game and it won't play/run at all

It's International Karate+

I thought the PS2 could play PS1 games so was disappointed when it didn't work today :(

Is there anything I can do to make it work? is there some little tip or trick to getting it to work?!

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks! Dennis! West London UK!

Hiya! I'm no expert but in my attempts to get my Castlevania: SOTN backup to work on my PS2, I have discovered that I needed a software called Breaker Pro in order to make it work. Is your game an import version? If so, you need Breaker Pro to make it work. Haven't actually succeeded myself as of yet, but I'm hoping to :P

Well you could try removing the chip to see if its that or it could be that your laser needs tweaking or your disk is scratched or dirty.I think that the disk is dirty.Try cleaning the disk and try again.

some chips like the Messiah 2 have different modes
that they need to be put in for playing PS1 games
but without knowing what you have it is impossible
to help you.

thanks for the replies so far!

the disc is a UK PAL version - printed on the disc itself

There are no scratches marks or blemishes on the black surface. Seems quite clean even when I check it out under light.

I'm going with Steimy's response that the mod chip has different modes in order to play PS1 games.

Thing is, is there anyway to tell which chip it is ? or do I have to open up the casing to find this out?

Cheers!

Yes you need to open the case to check what kind of chip you have.

Ok I understand I'll need to open it up!

Now then, I'm quite a dab hand at gizmo's did electronic engineering at uni but, I've never opened up a PS2.

I've looked at my unit and can see that the screws are on the underside. If I loosen these, will the unit just have a 'cover' type arrangement? or is there any special considerations I should know of?

I'm hoping it'll be nice an easy!

Cheers ! I'm very impressed with this site and forum section so far :)

Is it an older chunky style PS2, that is the only
kind i have opened
BUt on those you just unscrew ALL the screws on the bottom
note that some are under plastic square covers, and the
others under the little rubber squares used as feet.
after that the top should come right off.
i suggest carefully lifting the side that does not have
the eject button on it and just opening it like a hinge
if you are not careful the silver ribbon attached to the
eject/power button can come out. Make sure all the memory cards
and controllers are unplugged.

Yo!

Yep, It's a 'chunky' style PS2!!

I'll give this a go probably tommorow at this point, and let you guys know what I can see on the 'Chip' - Uh oh, now I just thought, where is the 'chip' that I'm looking for? will it be 'obvious' to see? and of course I'm hoping that it does have some sort of markings on it identifying it!
Knowing my luck it'll probably be a unmarked IC Chip !!!

Cheers!

well the chip your looking for has wires soldered to it and wires soldered to the motherboard(thats where the chip is located). The name of the chip is usually on top of the actual chip just so u know.

Hi there!

Well I gave it a go! Alas, I was unable to move the 'top silver chassis wide' cover that sits over the IC chips.

I carefully dismantled the unit, and could see where everything was and how to reverse the disassembly. All good to this stage. Then I found the chassis wide silver cover was more loose where the DVD drive side, tried prising from there, no luck. The other side was held down solidly and I couldn't see what was holding it in place, no screws, no clasps etc. So rather than break I just re-assembled it all!

I think I'll just pass it over to the person who modified it a couple years ago, If my bro can still remember who it was of course!! failing that, I'll pass it over to someone I'll find from personal adverts to take a look at it.

Anyone here know of someone in the West London/Heathrow area of the UK who looks at consoles?!!!

Cheers for now - I wont play PS1 games until I get this sorted and that IK+ game is one im dying to play again!!

Cheers! Dennis! West London UK!!

@xzsawq

it really depends on the chip you want you want but yeah, most of the chips can boot burnt PS1 games.Check the kind of chip you have and check if there is a special boot procedure to play burnt PS1 games.

Success!!

Guess it was just a simple matter of 'knowledge'!

I found out from a local guy here who 'services and refurbish's' PS2 consoles that I had something called a 'Messiah 2'

I just have to power on, put the PS1 game in and then power down. Then power back on and hold down the power button for a few seconds and hey golly gosh! it 'boots' into the PS1 game!

So that's that!

Now I just need to 'gain knowledge' so I can get more games to run from a memory stick on my nephews PSP! off to the PSP forum I go!

Cheers!
