I've been painstakingly backing up all my Memorex and other bad media lately to Verbatims and wondered just how many backups some of the others on this board make? FYI, the Primco stuff gave DVD Decryptor the hardest time by far. Absolute junk IMO. No problems with the Memorex backups.

That is way too many coasters!

I thought 1 coaster out of 300-400 was bad!

I really like the verbatim data life plus +8x and the digital movie quality +4x out of all the verbatims I have burned.

I buy the good media that is on sale like fuji/sony yuden000-T02,maxell-002-00,along with the maxell and Office Depot brand +8x Ritek-R03.All sweet, all over 99% success rate and stand alone compatability from both my benqs. Many are on the fly backups!!!!

1500+ Verbatim's here, many others too (but only decent ones i hasten to add!)

i've had the odd coaster, but they were all self-inflicted, and the odd duff disc/burn. If ever i have 1 single coaster i go mad and start checking all the burns i did in that sitting. Worse still, because a 100% completed burn does not guarantee a 100% usable/watchable disc, if i get one that skips/freezes or whatever during playback, i have to recheck all i'd done in that sitting and as many more that i can remember doing in the day or so up to that burn. Luckily that is a very occurrence

Listening to stories like Creaky's make me feel at least partially sane ;> I just don't have the time to watch everything I'm backing up. I did learn to watch all my Netflix rentals to make sure they play alright. One of my favorites, Apocalypse Now Redux has some freeze frames that I probably could have avoided if I had just cleaned the disc first.

Another thing on stand alone coasters. If your re-author like I do on majority of my backups:
Columbia pictures has been putting some screwy encryptions on the beginning of some of their movies, just when the movie starts. The grudge was one and another was last week with Lords of dogtown. The grudge caused the disc not to play in my very reliable sony stand alone player, and LODT had the black screen at the beginning. I usually set my start frame and end frame to cut out those begining and ending credits to reduce compression, but forgot to on those 2 movies.
By cutting out the lady liberty trademark,my backups were ok after that. Many others had playback trouble with those 2 movies so it can't be a fluke.

Just some info in case anybody re-authors for main movie only. Beware of columbia pictures,at the beginning of the backup. That cost me one of my very few playback coasters this year.

And I thought I was burning up a storm! LOL I did 450 or so burns in 4 months! Only one coaster since joining AD and that was my fault! not the burner or the disk's!! I've slowed down a little because I'm getting a little picky on what to burn.

I've probably backed up 30 or 40 of my first burns done on crap media. The ones I was able too anyway. I lost my dear Shaun of the Dead to memosux and had to go back to the original for backup. Absolutely no coasters out of 250-300 burns after discovering AD and Taiyo Yuden. I just recently recopied 2 discs for a friend at work that were burnt on memorex, made in India. After looking at the k-probe results on the originals I can't believe I was able to burn them let alone play them. Well he now has his movies on Ty media and is happy he can play them again!

- nice wording!. i deliberately didn't mention the 500 Bulkpaq Orange *cough* FAKE *cough* disks i've yet to recopy from originals. it's their fault i've become the twisted bad media-hating menace that i am now :)

I guess one of the things I was looking to get some feedback on is, do you make backups of your backups? Seems a little nutty, but once that ISO is on my HD, I find myself burning it twice just to be sure.

Wow! You guys have been burning up a storm. I have learned so much from everyone at AD and I hope I have contributed just a little back through advice and experience. I have backed up 800 DVDS. SOme of those include DL's and extra's for different sections of the home. I haven't had a coaster in a long time. My last was with an issue that a WB movie didn't back up with the correct audio stream using Intercopy 3...I know it has issues but beyond that Intercopy words quite well and I love the quality. Several have mentioned Recode 2 and I have to say that I really like this prog. and for no compression I'll use Decrypter. My media chocies are: Taiyo Yuden 4x -R's 01's and 8x -R 02's, Fuji's +R which code as Taiyo Yuden (made in Japan), Sony's (Made in Japan, also code as Taiyo Yuden) and of course the always trustworthy Verbatims and Maxell's. Thanks to kivory666, saugmon, arniebear, brobear, creaky, and Ihoe I have been burning flawlessly and enjoying every minute of it, but I gain mre joy from helping others learn how to do this and hearing of their successes. Have a great day guys. Quick question: My Sony DRU 800 ul will only allow burning the FuJi's and Verbs at 6x and 8x, when I place them in the NEC and Samsung I can burn at 2x and 4x. The sony has a new firmware, but I go ahead and burn at 6x and they are flawless. I know I'm breaking one of our hardened rules (4x or slower) but I have been burning at 6x and they play flawless in the Denon 2200 and the Sony dvd players. Any thoughts? Thanks for listening.

As a newbie to this game of 2 weeks I have made 3 coasters and 7 good burns. The coasters came before I found this site, which prompted me to look for this site. I have since downloaded AnyDVD and CloneDVD trials and burned my good seven.

Bad news is is that the powersupply to my new puter puked and I am in limbo till the replacement gets here.

I have been using Maxell and Fuji so far. I will not purchase the memosux as you all have warned against.

Anyhow, thanks for the great site and interesting reading.

Regarding Memorex, when I learned my lesson regarding bad media, I emailed Memorex explaining how I had much success with their RicohJpnR01's but I was experiencing 50% failure with CMCMags and was extremely disappointed. This was a 10pack. I filled out a form, they sent me 5 Ricohs in jewel cases, at a cost of $13 USD shipping to Canada??? More than I paid for the silly things to begin with. LOL I was pleased that they did this, but refused to buy Memorex ever again.

Now if everyone did this, PERHAPS, they might start putting out GOOD media!

Movie...... thanks for the compliment! I am honored to be included with such elete as kivory666, saugmon, arniebear, brobear, and creaky! All wonderful guides to the DVD kingdom world of AD!

You asked about why your drives only allow you to burn at certain speeds while other drives you have burn faster..... you're right, it's your firmware.... you updated your sony.... update your NEC and
Samsung and maybe you'll have better luck.... but why should you if it already allows you to burn at 4X? I know...... the TYs and the Fuji or Sony (that are made by Yuden) also allows higher speeds than 8x! I can burn at 16X but do I? No.... I tried some, just out of curiosity, and they all work just fine. I'm waiting till they don't! So far so good. I burn only at 4x no matter what. Haven't had a coaster in ages and I plan never to have one again! Now that I have a printer that prints right on the disk and Teflon gave me the print setting for TY +R, 8x, white inkjet hub printables..... I won't have a coaster even when I print on top of them! LQQks great, too! Almost as good as the originals! I'm rambling now! LOL Anyway, MovieDud, thanks for the compliment, I'm in very good company!

@moviedud

hehe, yes the burn @4x is a GENERAL rule here on AD, but, i find myself BREAKING IT ALL THE TIME~ :) i actually burn ALL my 8x rated media as well as my 16x rated media @ 8x~ ALL are flawless~, i ONLY burn @4x on my Taiyo Yuden TYG01s (4x dvd-r), but other than that...everything else is @8x~

i have found that IF you have the proper hardware to do so AND use high quality media HAND IN HAND, at least for me PERSONALLY, i have no problems burning @8x~ :)

i have the high end Denon older flagship model, the dvd-5900, 28lb MONSTER, they discontinued it's production, so i can see where your Denon might have problems in playback, MINE is picky as heck~!, but IF your burns @6x have proven to be good, stay at that speed...no reason to CHANGE what already works? sometimes we all need to compromise based on the playability of our own stand alone players :)

good luck buddy, thanks for the compliment as well~ :)

@kivory666 and Ihoe, Thanks for the input and your own individual experiences. I have been burning the FuJi's and Sony's at 6X with not one single problem. Even did a CRC test and no problems. I guess I kind of become paranoid about the 4x. On the TY's 02's they can burn at 4x on the Sony...It's kind of strange but if it works flawlessly then why worry. Again thanks for all you share at AD it has helped not just me but many others as well. I wish all Dvd Media manufacterers would put out great media...I know...wishful thinking, but I'm very optimistic. Have a good night my friends.

my burning up a storm has turned into a damp squib. i should've taken heed of that Jackie Chan movie the other night that went slow-mo and skipping/freezing. i redid that movie at the time and it turned out fine, however settled down at 10pm last night to watch a movie i'd just burned, got right near the end (5mins fom the end) and the dreaded slow-mo kicked in. no worries, just popped in the original and finished watching. However this was one of the new-fangled Verb-TY's. Not happy. I permanently stick to 4300MB, keep to 4x, defrag often, keep everything updating, no multitasking (which the last week or 2 i've taken to extremes by building an old second PC to make sure i leave main PC alone yada yada yada. Anyway, it was too late to do anything except a CRC check - lo and behold it had errors right at the end. So at least i could go to bed knowing at least my standalone could be ruled out.
So at 6am, got sorted for work and made the time to rip out the (up 'til now) trusty Sony DRU-700A and receipt. It's 3weeks under a year since i bought it so off to PC World it goes for a swapout. I guess they'll swap me for the DRU-800A. but more importantly i'm gonna have to start CRC checking every disk until i can trust another drive. might invest in one of those CD drive cleaners and maybe a compressed air can, though i've never had to clean a CD drive before. ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHH! (multiple swearwords deleted). i just hope those new Verb-TYs are ok as i still have about 400 of them. ARGHHHHHHHHHHH again!

Creaky........ now I'm scared........ I burn a lot of movies and I hardly watch them all! I strickly use TYs! I hope that doesn't happen to me or to the TYs! That would drive me up the wall. I would stop everything and start watching all my movies to see if it happened to all of them. So far so good.
