strange problem with encoding

I'm trying to encode silence of the lambs, and something rather strange happens. After awhile, the screens shots during encoding start to have errors. Half the screen in that little window turns green and only the top half keeps showing where the encoding is up to. Then soon after the buffer gets larger and larger until it is larger then my ram and the whole process comes to a stop.
I've never had this problem before.

anyone else have this problem?

are running AnyDVD or any other software to help with encryption
