that's ok. 4x only for me, and that's also what most recommend. there are exceptions but it's just not worth the hassle of skipped discs/redoing discs etc etc. i stick to all the sensible rules, plus keep everything update, no multitasking etc etc etc and as long as the burner plays along, i have zero coasters other than the odd self-inflicted coaster, ie i did multitask one night and had a couple coasters. in hindsight it looks like my burner was dying anyway but i still shouln't have been multitasking

the 810 might be an idea then if i can get one. am also reading up on the LG 4163B as i only ever see it in endless Nero logs so want to see a couple reviews on it, and whether i can booktype with it..

overclockers is a great shop, i don't find their prices to be the best but they are a very good shop

me and a colleague are throwing a few ideas around - ie from here - http://codeguys.rpc1.org/dvdrw_overview.html

- down near bottom of the page there's the sony 800A and it's a rebadged lite-on 1693S. i was looking at the newer nec drives but you'd need third party firmware for bitsetting. i think i'll swap my faulty sony for the 800A or 810A, whichever is the newest internal sony that pc world have in the shop. and i'm tempting to buy the lg 4163b from svp and put that in one of my usb enclosures however i read too many horror stories re usb enclosures, s'pose i could try it and at least have a spare burner for emergencies.

as for booktyping, it basically allows making +R discs to appear to standalone players as a normal dvd-rom disc, therefore fools the standalone into thinking it's playing a normal dvd-rom disc

Can you do me a favour, I'm walking down the shop now but forgot to check whether the 810a can booktype (I spose it does) - this handheld is crap for googling - can you check if it booktypes (otherwise known as bitsetting). Cheers

does the sony firmware support bitsetting?
yes it does, the only difference with the sony is that it does not work fully with QSuite, you cannot enable overburn or WOPC

Cheers. I've swapped it for a lite-on 1693s which is the same difference as the sony 800a but 10quid less than the sony at 50quid (my faulty one cost 80quid so I even got 30quid back). I did tell the guy in the shop that the sony and lite-on are the same drives for 10quid difference but realised I was coming across as knowledgable being as I'd first gone in shop saying "my burner is a year old and playing up, dunno why". I then said "I know about Nero so I know the drive is faulty" then elected to shut up before he realised I've probably just worn out the drive!!.

A successful and informative day I think. I may even order the lg 4163b from svp for.... Hehe... 30quid.

Cheers for checking :) :)
