Hey all,
Pretty new to the forum here....
I am using a dell dimension desktop, windows xp, I have a
liteon 16x dvd r/rw drive. I have tried to burn a dvd before with some maxwll discs, but it skipped when I played it one the tv, all the way through, not just at the end, like some posts I have read before. I do use labels, but it skipped before I put it on there, and hasn't gotten any worse or better. I went and bought some better Sony dvd r 1x - 8x discs. I heard the Sony name was a lot more dependable.
I didn't mess with any compression settings, I don't know anything about that. A liitle information about that would be great. That's all the information I can think of, if you need more please ask, but really I just need the basics to get the disc to play fine. Oh by the wway my disc that I burned before played fine in the computer all the way through, no skips whatsoever, only on the tv is where I had problems.

Your pc is playing those backups ok,but your stand alone player has issues with them:
Maxell and sony are very good media, but I don't know which format you are using.
What format are they?
What programs are you using for: Ripping/compressing/Burning.
How fast did you burn them?
Did you backup entire dvd or main movie only?
Can you test them on a few other stand alones and verify on them?
What is the brand name and model # of the stand alone player on your tv?
Stand alone players can have a harder time with dvd backups. Burning too fast, poor quality media, and too much compression are the usual culprits. That stand alone player just may need a laser lens cleaning if it is the only drive that has problems with your backups.

What speed did you burn at? Burn speeds are VERY important! If you burn at max speed, even if the burn was successful, you can still get errors and glitches on the disc. Try to burn at 4x with good media and you should be fine.
Also, some standalone players are very picky with media. Maybe your standalone DVD player didn't like the Maxell discs you used. Try using Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. These discs seem to play on all standalones.
What is the model of your burner? I'm just curious because I have a Lite-On burner myself and I was wondering if it's the same model that I have. I have never had any problems with my Lite-On. :-)

There are few things to look for when it comes to dvd burning. Below are a few to keep in mind. Basically, it's pretty much the same thing as the above members had mentioned.
What's your computer's specs (processor and ram)?
How fast did you burned?
What program/software did you used to burn?
How old is your dvd player and is it compatible with both -R/+R formats?
Does your backed up copy play smoothly on your computer?
Is your dvd burner's firmware up-to-date?
Are you multi-tasking when the burning is performed?

My stand alone is a phillips mx3600d, I dont what you mean when u say "what format am I using?" Also I burned the entire dvd, am I supposed to just burn the main movie instead? I kinda wanted all the menus and everything on there, but if I can't have them I guess it's ok. Let me know.... I burned at the default speed, how do I slow it down? I used Nero 6 to burn it. I used shrink to back it up. I have 756 mb ram and a pentium 4, I believe 2.2 ghz processor. Pretty quick for a not so new computer in my opinion but if I need something else let me know. I was trying to copy my scene goes to hollywood for my 6 year old daughter. Ha Ha Ha, yeah I know, but it was for my daughter, c'mon give me a break guys. Thanks for all your help.

@cvalii81,
Your computer specs are good to go. Just a note for you to have in mind here; both Maxell and Sony media are high quality, especially if they're "Made In Japan".
DVD Shrink and Nero is a good combination, but you'll need to set the "burning speeds" inside DVD Shrink to 4X in prior to click OK for backup to run. To change the speeds, follow these few steps below.
at Backup DVD on DVD Shrink, click on "Burn Settings"
at Burn Speed: set it to 4X
check [tick] Book Type DVD-ROM (if your dvd burner is capable of changing the "book type" when you're using DVD+R disc)<--- this is one of the best and safest way to go.
Or can you post up your Nero History Log? To get your latest burning log from Nero, go here C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistory and copy the very last section.
WARNING: you need to EDIT out your Nero Serial # that start with 1A23-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX or something similar. Now post the Nero Log back on here and we'll see what we can find to sort you out alright.

You have plus format and you have dash format. No big difference in the 2 formats, usually stand alone player compatability.Seeing as you have a litey 16x,you've the ability to booktype the plus format to dvd-rom.This booktyping alters the plus format to the more universal dvd-rom format for better stand alone compatability.
We still need to know how fast you burned them.Looks like you backup just like i do, using DVD Shrink and Nero. When you click backup, check your burn options. Make sure it is at about 4x. Some of these newer 16x writers will burn 8x media at 12x and 16x.Make sure it is not set for max speed.
