Hey guys, I recently purchased the new Sony RDR-VX515 combo DVD recorder/VHS recorder. It states it will record onto DVD+R DL discs, however, I found this not to be the case. I have tried burning onto Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R DL discs, but the unit would stop half-way through and not burn. I noticed on CompUSA's website they have a Sony brand DVD+R DL disc, but not it is listed as "sold out". Does anyone know another place that carries this Sony brand, and is it new? I wasn't aware that Sony even made a DL disc.
Also, I contacted Sony regarding the Verbatim issue and their response was rather generic basically saying to buy Sony branded media and not third party. Any suggestions on dual layer media that is high quality that will work with my RDR-VX515? Thanks!

jon

According to my knowledge, the 2.4X or 4X Verbatim DVD+R DL is a top notch media (at this very moment). No other DL media is superior than, and or performs better than the Verbatim period. To back this up, I've had successfully backed up 30 plus DVD+R DL media using 2.4X Verbatim (Made In Singapore) and they all plays/loads flawlessly.

I don't know anything about the Sony RDR-VX515 Combo DVD Recorder, however, there is a possibility that your Recorder may be the main issue on this case.

Okay, okay .. I have one rather generic question: Have you updated your drive with the latest firmware?

And allkohol is correct .. at least for right now, Verbatim makes the best DL disc money can buy

Alkohol, yes, I agree Verbatim is good, and I have had luck with them when using them on my computer's DVD burner, but no luck with them on my Sony RDR-VX515, which is a tabletop model that features a DVD player/recorder on one side, and a VHS VCR player/recorder on the other. You can view it on Sony's website. This model replaced the RDR-VX500 which didn't allow recording onto Dual Layer media....this new Sony RDR-VX515 does allow recording to Dual Layer media, but I have not had any luck. Sony's response when I emailed them was not to use third party media (figures) but I can't seem to find the Sony brand DVD+R DL blank media anywhere...CompUSA has it listed on their website as "sold out" but I never saw it in any store, so perhaps it is not officially out yet.

Catfreak, the unit in question isn't a computer DVD recorder...it is a table top model so updating the firmware isn't possible. i did check Sony's website though to see, and no new info is out, since it is a new model that just came out within the last two months. Overall my Sony DVD recorder in my computer works great with Verbatim....it's just the tabletop model that I am having issues with.

Updating a standalone (tabletop) recorder's firmware IS indeed possible. I havwe successfully updated the firmware on my LiteOn LVW-5005 settop recorders .. You download the firmware upgrade, burn it to a CD and put the CD in your recorder. It will give you a prompt at this point. A brand new model such as your Sony is a prime candidate to have a firmware upgrade made available. (They probably didn;t get the DL media instructions quite right)

Thanks Catfreak for the info, I kind of thought that perhaps this was possible. I did check Sony's website for a firmware update, but nothing was listed yet. I just got an email survey from them on what i thought of the response and pretty much said I wasnt impressed since the message seemed automated.
I will check out Sony's website and see if I can sign up for a firmware update when available.

Now, if only I can find those Sony DVD+R DL discs that CompUSA has advertised....

the only reason i bought such expensive media is the supreme confidence i have in the media i use, knowing that the only coaster i'll get is from user error
