oh yeah, they look like nvidia. that means there must be 2 types of nvidia drivers for DMA then , there's these ones - 'nvidesm' - and there's also 'nvatabus' out there. i dunno the diference between the 2 types

i think this particular Nero log is a firmware issue/DMA issue, update the firmware and turn DMA:ON and things SHOULD be fine...i'm surprised with such an outdated firmware the drive STILL manages to identify the ever so tasty, MCC004 Verbatim 16x DVD+R media...ok, im getting hungry~ :)

wow, almost as much as me...i got 4 gigs btw, but, 955mb is MORE than sufficient for the burning process :)
DMA and firmware update...media is just fine~ plenty of memory, don't know much about the whole nvidia driver thing-a-ma-jiggy, so, i'll leave that to the Nero pro, creaky~ :)

ah, but i dunno about those DMA drivers, gonna have to cheat and google for 'em..
found a similar thread with these same 'nvidesm' drivers - to reset the DMA settings, reload your motherboard's (Nvidia) drivers

Addressing Everybody,
Okay, why is the serial number important? If you mean that someone will take it, get a copy of Nero Express, and use the serial to activate the app, can?t they get a copy & serial easily anyway? It?s just the software that came with the drive. Aren?t there a gazillion copies out there? Maybe I don?t understand what this serial does. Actually, I?m not sure I remember activating the software when I installed, but maybe I did...Maybe you guys mean it?s against the rules of the forum to post a serial because it?s like offering a crack. I never read rules; life is too short :P
In Device Manager > IDE ATA /ATAPI controllers > there?s only one item, NVIDIA nforce IDE controller. There?s no Advanced tab, and no place to change the DMA from off to on. The last post by creaky says I should reload. I suppose you mean I should uninstall and then reinstall. I?m hesitant because I?m not altogether confident I understand how to reinstall. I think I have the old disk somewhere. Do I need it? And once I reinstall, how do I change the DMA setting in the process?
I successfully installed v 10 of the firmware from Samsung. Interesting. It?s a bit different than installing a regular program. I?m going to try to burn without uninstalling-reinstalling the NVIDIA driver. I?ll see how well the burner works in the current condition. I?ll report back. By the way, as it was, I could burn CDs. It was the DVDs that gave me trouble. Thanks!

I tried at 8x to be conservative. Nero Express said the process failed, and the disk has some JPEGs that won't open. I suppose the next step is to un- and then re- install the driver.
Yes, I see that this time I should have closed Word before the burn, but certainly that?s not the main problem.

Don't know if it applies in your case, but you might try this from another Forum.
"Go back to Device Manager and either double-click the NVIDIA nforce3 250 parallel ATA Controller (v2.6) or right click to Properties and left click to open. You should see a General Tab, Primary Channel, Secondary Channel and so on. Click on the Primary Channel Tab and you should see your DVD under Master Drive, along with Transfer Mode with a drop-down list that has Ultra DMA mode. If the box "Let BIOS select transfer mode" is checked, you won't be able to see what options are available in the drop-down but BIOS should have selected it by default. If not, un-check the BIOS option then select Ultra-33 option manually. Give that a try, that is if you can find it. if your DVD isn't being detected properly, try to uninstall the NVIDIA nforce3 250 parallel ATA Controller (v2.6) and reboot. Once you get back up and running, Windows should see your DVD player and re-install the drivers. Been there, done this."

I don't have "NVIDIA nforce3 250 parallel ATA Controller (v2.6)". All I have is NVIDIA nforce IDE controller, and it doesn't have those options. Here's what it looks like:

I don't want to labour the point, but before I click on properties I am offered the option on the menu to uninstall the controller.
I just want to verify that your set-up does not offer that choice.
Note, I do not have the same controller as yourself and so far no one who does has stepped up and also the DMA aspect (in this case) may be a red herring.

I too have Uninstall in the contex (rightclick) menu. But if I uninstall, I'll have to reinstall and I'll need the install disk or the file. I'll find one or the other if you guys think that's where the problem is.
I don't think DMA is an issue either. There's no place to change it anyway (that I can see).
If you were in my situation, what would be your next step?

there's nothing to be frightened of in deleting the controllers as Windows simply re-detects them upon reboot. as to these 'nvidesm' drivers, all we've done before to get the DMA back ON is to reinstall the motherboard drivers..

I would uninstall the controller.If I was concerned about the drivers (they reside on the HD, right?), I would get a copy of them on a floppy as insurance.Just like a boot disk.
At least if the DMA starts working, it eliminates that aspect as a cause of the problem.

I uninstalled the NVIDIA nforce IDE controller, as suggested. Had to reboot twice because Windows asked for it. The baloons said the install went okay. But I still can't write to a DVD. Any suggestions?
Another thing...
But now in Divice Manager, I have three items under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers:
Primary IDE Channel
Secondary IDE Channel
Stamdard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controler
All of which claim to be "working properly".
How come I have three of them now? What do they do anyway?

the only thing that's now incorrect is the burn speed, slow it right down to say 4x. instead of (possibly) wasting more discs, just before you hit 'burn', click on 'simulation burn' - it'll go thru the motions opf a burn with a blank disc but won't write to the disc...

Hi there,
This is normal, since you have removed the nVidia drivers and using the Windows Generic drivers.
I noticed DMA says ON now !
Just keep burning at 4x, man asking for 16x is way over kill, and asking for problems.
My 2 cents...

#1 So when nehmo said that he uninstalled the controller, that uninstalls the existing nvidia drivers?
#2 Or is it that the nvidia drivers are still onboard, but when XP detects a new controller it automatically installs it's own drivers?
If #2 is the case, what sequence of steps would you take to re-install the nvidia drivers?
