Hi gear79,thanks for your reply, thread the other day I was looking for ScubaPetes guides which I eventually found. I have checked out both guides you provided but neither cover my queerie. I do NOT have an original disc, the movies were downloaded from the NET. I usually burn them with Nero but its playing up on me and I wanted to use Decryptoe and shrink(some are very long). I know how to use both prog using original DVD but having trouble with downloaded movies.

What file(s) i.e. AVI, DivX, XviD, Mpeg, etc. are the movies?

Hi Alkohol, how have you been. I haven't seen any posts from you for a while and I was thinking of asking if you were still kicking! Some of the movies are AVI and some are MPEG there is also a XviD...so many different formats becomes quite confusing. I have been powering along quite OK since our first MEETING (as such) LOL

@ gwendolin
can your stand alone read straight .AVI format or mpeg4, data?
if so, you can burn straight to dvd with Nero, no compression needed, or encoding. just a suggestion.
i do, however, (in the past mostly) use Nero to do all, no shrink or decrypter, but to make an AVI into mpeg2, use Nero 'create your own dvd'
pretty simple. let me know if you got all that.

Sorry for the time taken to reply but I just found out(the expensive way) that Norton doesn't like being replaced. The answer is yes but I am havind real trouble getting Nero to work for me. I have had in excess of 30 successful burns but now its being stubborn..freezing and not finishing transcoding. I have removed Nero and re installed but havent given it a run as yet. The reason I wanted to use Shrink and Decrypter is because of the movies volume...wellin excess of 4.7g.

You cannot just uninstall Norton Anti Virus. You need to get a cleaning tool. Make sure you clean out every version of Norton you ever had in order (i.e. first 2003, then 2004, etc...). You can find the tool somewhere at symantec.com. Here is the link to 2003 and earlier. It will also point you to the newer version removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001092114452606
What I do is encode the movies using TMPGEnc and then reauthor them in an authoring program, ether DVDlab pro, DVD Maestro, or DVD Architect.
You can try out DVDlab pro for 30 Days and you can try out TMPGEnc for either 15 or 30 days for free, I forget which...
When you encode your movies, you have to first look at the video quality of the original. If they are of high quality, then you will want to use high bitrate to encode, if they are low quality, then you can get away with lower bitrates.
For animations and such, you can go bery low bitrate, and the quality will not suffer. For normal Hollywood films, you can go mid-range bitrate.
When you go this, route there are a few more steps to getting your final DVD:
First, encode your movie files to .m2v and .mp2.
Second, you encode your .mp2 to dolby Stereo .ac3
Third, you author your DVD
You will need:
Mediainfo
TMPGEnc 2.5 plus (I am not familiar with Xpress3, but it WILL work)
Besweet
Besweet GUI
Besweet AC3enc plugin
DVDlab Pro
IFOEdit
STEP 1: Encoding VIDEO
Make sure you have the proper codecs. You will get an error if you do not and you will not be able to encode the movie. If you get a black screen that says something like Encoder lag..., ignore this. This only lasts 1 frame and you will not notice it.
First, you have to decide how to allocate bitrate to your movies. To keep things simple, you can give each movie equal bitrate or you can have it different for each movie. I will give you some options for bitrate average based on length of video:
60 minutes: 7500 CBR kbps GOP: {1,7,0}
90 minutes: 6400 VBR kbps min: 2250 GOP: {1,11,0}
120 minutes: 4750 VBR kbps min: 1900 GOP: {1,7,1}
150 minutes: 3750 VBR kbps min: 1500 GOP: {1,4,2}
180 minutes: 3100 VBR kbps min: 1200 GOP: {1,4,2}
210 minutes: 2600 VBR kbps min: 1000 GOP: {1,5,2}
240 minutes: 2250 VBR kbps min: 900 GOP: {1,5,2}
270 minutes: 2000 VBR kbps min: 800 GOP: {1,5,2}
300 minutes: 1750 VBR kbps min: 700 GOP: {1,5,2}
CBR = Constant Bitrate
VBR = Variable Bitrate
Launch TMPGEnc Plus. A wizard will appear. Close it. Choose your video and audio source. For stream type choose ES audio + video.
Now click "settings". Under "video enter the following settings for NTSC:
Stream type: mpeg-2 video
Resolution: 720 x 480
Aspect: your choice
Frame Rate: 29.97
Rate control mode: 2-pass VBR(VBR)
Profile & Level: do not change
Video Format: NTSC
Encode Mode: Your Choice
YUV: 4:2:0DC Component Precis0ion: 9 Bits
Motion Search Precision: Normal or High
Now next to Rate control type click "setting". Set max bitrate to 7550 and average and minimum to the recommended bitrate for the length. I do not know how paddin affects the quality, but either one you choose is ok. Click OK.
Next, go to the "advanced" tab. Use mdiainfo to get the audio and video information and enter it in "Video Source setting". If you want to clip part of the movie, double click on "source range" and enter your start and end frame.
Now, click on "GOP structure" tab. Use the Recommended GOP settings for the video length. the first number stands for I frames, the second for P-frames, and the third for B-Frames. Then set "output interval of sequence header" to 1 and "max number of frames in a GOP" to 18 (15 for PAL).
Now go to the "audio" tab. Set the stream type to "mpeg1 layer II" and the bitrate to 192 kbps. Also check "Error Protection". Click OK.
You are finished setting up. I am not sure if the Demo will store your settings, but the full version does. Worst case, you just write down the settings or save the project. Now click the start button. After a minute or so, TMPGEnc will give you a good estimate of how long the encoding will take. It will most likely be a long time, so you can go watch a moive, or sleep, whatever, but stay away from the computer until it is finished.
STEP 2: Encoding AUDIO
The best way to get Besweet is to donload and install avi2dvd. It already comes with the AC3 encoder. All you have to o now is dowloan BesweetGUI. Launch BesweetGUI. Load Besweet.exe and your source file. Then click on "ac3 & OGG". Change the bitrate to 192 and click "mp2 to ac3". This transcodes super fast.
STEP 3: Author the DVD
It is a bit too late for me to write an authoring guide (3:15 AM), but I posted two short guides in these two threads:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/240399
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/239955
DVDlab is very easy to use, so do not be intimidated by the length or wordiness of both of those guides.
STEP 4: Test navigation with IFOEdit
Launch IFOEdit. Click "open" and load VIDEO_TS.ifo. Click "DVD Play" and test all menus, chapters, etc... If it works here, it will work on your standalone player.
STEP 5: Burn the movie
You already know how to do this
Hope this helps.

JaguarGod, firstly thanks for the advice on NORTON..I learned the hard and expensive way however the nasty little brute is no more. Secondly theres a lot to take in from your post, it all looks strange to me as I have never used any of those progs before so I will wade through it slowly. I have used both Decrypter and Shrink before and found them good progs I jusy cant get them to work on downloaded movies. 3.15am wow are you a "Night Owl" using time difference I'm trying to work out your location.LOL

It's not that I am a Night Owl, but more that I am bored and only sleep a couple of hours a day. I woke up at about 8AM, but I went to bed at about 5AM. I remember a couple of years ago, I used to sleep at least 15 hours a day.
Shrink and Decrypter will not work on downloaded movies, unless if you have downloaded the actual DVD. A DVD Download would either be .ISO or .rar with the DVD files packed inside.
If you actually downloaded a DVD, make sure that all the files are in a VIDEO_TS folder (CaSe SeNsItIvE). Also make sure you have all of the .ifo & .bup files as well as the .VOB files.
If you have .AVI, .mpg, .mpeg, .rm, etc..., then you need to convert the files to DVD Format.
I forgot to mention, but avi2dvd is a free solution to encoding your movie clips, but you will not have a menu when it is finished. Also, you do not have much control over the settings. Also, VSO DivXtoDVD may be a way to go. One of the members here always recommends it, so it has to be good.
I know that what I wrote for TMPGEnc was a lot and complicated, but that was only because depending on the length of the video you will want to make some changes in the settings. There are lots of other ways to go about it, but manually setting everything will give you the best results. Also, it gets you more involved in encoding. However, if you follow the what I wrote, you can get through it without thinking much.
As with all software, it is good to do some small test jobs to get a feel for the software. When I started messing with both TMPGEnc & DVDlab pro, I made ultra small movies. I would encode 2 minutes of video and then make a DVD out of it (just on the HD though). This way you get the experience without waiting a day for encoding or 20 minutes for the DVD to compile each time.
