There are many ways. One is to open DVD Decrypter and after sorce it will tell you your drive/s make and model. Then click the tools tab and then drive, check for firmware updates. It will tell you your current f/w.

It said I have a pioneer dvr k14, but I could only find k15, they wouldn't be the same thing would they? Also do you know what cyclical redudency errors are and how to get around them?

It said that it was 1.14 does that mean it is up to date? I can't get the drive to read any disks anymore, and I cleaned it and it still doesn't work, I was hoping that updating the firmware would fix the problem, but if it doesn't need updating what else could I do.

Look at an official pioneer f/w update website and see if you can find an update. Could be time for a new drive (possible but not definite). I've never come across that model before. How old is it?

I have just found out that my MB has fried, so I have to send it back to the puter place. My question about firmware is that once the MB is replaced will I have to upgrade the firmware for my recorder again? I have a GSA-4163 and the firmware came with A102, I upgraded to A105 be for the MB took a dump. What do you think?

Your burner's firmware lives in the actual burner, video card firmware lives in vid card etc, and the motherboard's euivalent of firmware is it's 'bios'

@Creaky,
Thanks for getting back to me. So should one periodically check for update on the video card firmware as well? ...MB bios? etc.

yeah, it pays to check every now and then, though these days it's more likely that your equipment becomes obsolete quicker, new stuff comes out too quickly. i'd say burner firmware is the one that's most important to check the most

My drive is not that old. We got this computer in march, and I have only been burning for three or four months.

newer firmware can still be released in that 3mths, and the opposite is true; ie more importantly, in that 3mths you could buy media that isn't supported by your firmware due to you not checking for updates, and/or the manufacturer of your burner might not keep the firmware updated often enough.

I tried to update the firmware for my cyberdrv CW068D CD-R/RW and the firmware site could not locate the drive. Any idea where to go to find this unit? Current firmware version is 110D.

I looked and there doesn't seem to be any firmware updates for the dvd burner that I have, could it be time for me to break down and take the whole laptop in?
