Hi,
I am interested in knowing what the file names on a commercial DVD movie mean? They have files such as T01, T02, etc. I would like to make a back up copy of a movie to protect my library and some DVD's are too large to copy everything. I just want to copy the movie and if possible, just a full screen version. How can I tell which are the correct files to copy?

I am not sure what you mean by file names. But, if you want to make a backup copy of any commercial DVD, you need to Shrink the Movie and then remove the encryption if you are burning to a normal single layer DVD --so, we need more information--Burner type (newer burners can even burn dual-layer but media is too expensive still)--There are complete guides in my sig and also all over this forum--practice with RW disks at first if you have any--good luck and let us know how you make out--lots of people here can help if you have problems

Hi,
Thanks for your prompt response. I have a program that can copy (or at least attempt) to copy the entire disc or it can copy just the main movie or you can copy parts of the disc. When I choose this option, a list of files? appears. They are marked, T01, T02, T03, etc. Some of these can be opened into smaller files. I guess those T items are folders of sorts. Anyway, is there anyway of knowing which of those "T" items is the movie or whatever I choose to copy, what I want to copy? I hope you understand my attempt at describing those folders.

Tony--
What program are you using? I use DVD Shrink(Free)--with this program you can save the entire movie without any of the extra's--trailers, previews, warnings etc.--Or you can copy the entire movie--the quality is then not as good--but still OK on a lot of movies--depends on the original length--Hope that helps--If you tell us which program you are trying to use, maybe I (or someone else)can help with that--

Hi again,
I am trying Clone DVD and it's not free. It seems to have the same options as the one you are using. My question is, assuming you want to make a copy with some or not of the "extras". How do you know which folders/files (or whatever they are) to select? Let's say in addition, the original has both a wide screen and full screen version. How do you select the version you want to save?
I was using a Pinnacle application, but something went wrong with that and I am trying to find another on.

Is it Clone DVD2? If so, I also have and use that program to copy DVD's and may be able to help more, but if it if just CloneDVD, I have no experience at all--In Clone DVD2, you can actually preview and pick either the full or Wide Screen--this I have done--but generally I just use the "Movie Only" option--Sorry, wish I could help more

Hi Whitfield,
The application is CloneDVD. I downloaded for a 14 trial period. It sells for $99.00. I really can't afford it, but if it did the job, I would buy it. It appears to work okay. The only problem is that if you want to copy the complete disc, it may have to go to two discs in order to be okay. The only trouble is that I would like to select the part of the original that I copy. Right now, I can't or don't know how.
What application do you feel does a decent job and can you select the parts of the original DVD you copy?

DVD Decrypter is the best burning app out there. You can select any part of the movie, movie only, the whole disc, whatever. When combined with DVD Shrink it is even better.
You can rip the entire disc with Decrypter, then import it into DVD Shrink and go into Reauthor mode. Select only the main movie and then click backup. Shrink will automatically make it fit on a single DVD. You can also do a full disc backup in Shrink and it will still compress the movie to fit on a single DVD.
You should check out the guides section on how to use these two programs. Also download them and back them up on CD. They are priceless!!!

JaquarGod is right, both of those apps are free and available right here--takes some practice in the re-author mode of Shrink, but well worth it--good luck
